699711 2008-08-23 06:15:00 Hey.... um ive been dumped with a 4-6 yeah old computer for around 3 months until i can buy my $2K gamer :D

The specs are dreadful with only 447MB Ram and a NVIDIA GeForce MX 440 (with APG8x)

I need to use this computer, which is hanging and playing up 24/7, for my NCEA and studys.

Any Ideas how i can speed up my system for free??

I was using IE7, but i have changed to Maxthon2.1 because i find it less ram hungry... but if there is a less greedy browser please recomend it to me...

And i use Avast, but I also have AVG on this system, so is there any better, less greedy Antivirus, and whats the best, out of AVG and Avast, for my system...

Ill be able to provide anything more if you need it... please help stop this endless slowness.... until december atleast...

699712 2008-08-23 06:17:00 There's lots of ways to speed up a slow machine!

Have you done a fresh Windows install?? That will help if it's software that's slowing it down.

Also, remove AVG. NEVER have >1 antivirus on one PC. Avast is much better than AVG.

Upgrade the RAM if you can afford it and the motherboard can support it.

Also get Firefox.

Which OS do you have??

699713 2008-08-23 06:29:00 Format the hard drive, and reinstall Windows from scratch. Install avast and Firefox. pcuser42 (130)
699714 2008-08-23 07:24:00 well it would help if you could tell us what version of windows it's running and what the cpu is and if you could take a look at whats running in the system tray at startup that'd be a help......the amount of ram is not necessarily insufficient at all if the system is run and managed sensibly. I wouldn't be rushing out to buy more before actually ascertaining if you NEED it........and cleaning up background running startup stuff, update software, etc would be smart.....also you should only have ONE antivirus program on the pc NOT two......and check if one of them is runnin a scan at startup that wont help. And has it been defragmented at all ever or recently and what bout 'disk check' (xp version scandisk) and how much free space does it have and what's the virutal memory set at......

hanging and playing up 24/7,

please state some specifics

699716 2008-08-23 23:38:00 to set/check virtual memory, follow these instructions:

1. Right click on my computer either found on the desktop or found in the start menu and choose properties.

2. Click on Advanced on the many tabs available to you

3. Click the Settings button found listed first under the Performance sub heading

4. Again click the Advanced tab on the new window thats popped.

5. Look at the very bottom of the page, it will say Virtual memory. It will also list the total paging file size for all drives: (mine is currently set at 1152MB). Yours will be either higher or lower.

Follow this step to change the Virtual memory:
6. Click the Change button.

7. If there is no dot next to Custom size, please put one and fill in these fields with: (seeing that you have 70gb+ free on your main drive)
Initial size: 1200
Maximum size: 2500

8. Click the set button followed by the okay button.

9. Click the Apply (if available) and then the OK button.

10. Click the Apply (if available) and then the OK button.

11. Restart your computer

12. Done :). Happy gaming/studying/hanging champ

699717 2008-08-23 23:46:00 it's better to set min and max the same it reduces work for the sysetm having to resise the virtual memory cache

It has been defragged around 2 months ago, but that took >40 hours

a misprint surely ? 40 hours to defrag

clik start button then run then type in

msconfig

then tap enter then in the 'startup' tab take note of what is listed and let us know what you have someone will then no doubt suggest 'weeding out' some of the superfluous stuff .

also worth before you do that AND afterwards holding down alt/ctrl and tap del key to bring up task manager then clik 'performance' and look under the listing for 'available memory' that'll tell you how well you are doing both before weeding out the startup list and after . . . . . it'll tell you if you really NEED some more ram . . . . . . . .

cpu type ? . . . . . . . often if you just right clik 'my computer' then clik properties it'll tell you there . . . . . . . .
