457681 2006-05-25 10:05:00 Just after some ideas for a 'doorbell' activated by car or person walking down a residential driveway . I have a plan to make something from dicksmith either from their kits (light activated switch + dingdong door bell kits) or else by modifying the innards of their readymade doorbells .

One of the battery operated readymade jobs has some kind of motion detector (sells for about $50) .

However, the sensor will be some distance from the house and so the bell will have to be extracted .

I have already laid about 60 meters of 8 core data cable (DSE part # W2046) from the house to the driveway . Not sure how much voltage drop there will be if I need to power a light beam system .

Just wondering what other options anyone can think of . . . . infra red leds perhaps?

I have a basic electrical knowledge having made a few electronic kitsets etc .

Any ideas appreciated :)

457682 2006-05-25 10:29:00 Having done a bit more searching it appears infra red is the way to go . That $50 motion detector alarm wont work in the dark and a visible lightbeam wouldnt really cut it .

So, looks like I'll be modifying an infra red all in one buzzer . . . anyone else done this that can offer advice?

457683 2006-05-25 10:32:00 I use one of these:
www.dse.co.nz

I have it fed by about 50m of 4 pr data cable (only 3 cores are needed and the current required does not overly affect the voltage at the device) its been quite stable over the last few years. Power adapter is inside the house at the site of the chime alarm, uses a data cable pair at 9v, another core for the return.

457684 2006-05-25 10:40:00 you can get, somewhere, sicurity light sensors that play a tune instead of switching lights. seen one that barks like a dog and one that chirps when anything walks up the drive. tweak'e (69)
457685 2006-05-25 11:07:00 i once wired an internal light to a standard security light sensor setup so that if anyone came in the driveway instead of the exterior light goin off the internal bulb on the wall lit up (it was just a dim, coloured one) worked wonderfully as a 'silent warning' device..... drcspy (146)

They will have what you need and the rest.

457687 2006-05-26 11:54:00 Trouble with an infra red sensor is they must be carefully setup otherwise they false trigger quite a bit. This will drive yah nuts if it's connected to a bell. Ask anyone who has infra red sensor exterior light.

Seem to remember a project in Electronics Australia that did exactly what you want, (Sorry, can't remember the issue or year) but it was triggered by a pipe buried just below the surface of the driveway. Inside the plastic pipe was just a coil of wire. When a vehicle drove across it changes the coils inductance and this is sensed by the electronics. This is exactly how traffic lights work and is a very reliable system. People won't trigger it however. It may be a bit of a overkill for your system. You decide.

As stated above, Jaycars should be able to sell you parts or the whole kit set. Just mention it to them, they will be only to happy to take your money!!

457688 2006-05-26 12:23:00 Just went to Jaycars Website and they sell the kitset for the Driveway Sentry, but it's too expensive, about $214 . 00 . That's far to dear for what you want . It was published in Nov 2004 issue of Silicon Chip, (Not Electronics Australia, sorry 'bout that the old memory's not what it use to be), maybe someone might have the issue and sent you a copy of the circuit or you could try your local library . This would keep the price way down .

457690 2006-05-26 22:58:00 Thanks for all the ideas everyone . I have ended up buying an infra red alarm from dicksmith . ( . dse . co . nz/cgi-bin/dse . storefront/447779a501dce492273fc0a87f990778/Product/View/L8139" target="_blank">www . dse . co . nz )
Although cheaper than the model recommended by godfather it appeared to be more upgradeable/modifiyable . It has external bell connections, and N . O . & N . C . relay connections too . It is not waterproof so I intend to dig out a cavity in a large fence post and spray/paint the interior with some waterproofing compound then mount a tinted plate of glass in front to seal it in .

I know these things dont have the best track record for reliability (my aunt had one which was never satisfactory) but I hope that by mounting both parts into solid posts will increase stability of the system .

Thanks again .
