| 700562 | 2008-08-26 19:52:00 | Hi, My friend got the broadband from slingshot with plan 256KBPS download and 128KBPS upload speed. How ever, he is always complaining that his broadband is slow. He has tested with the online speed test tool from slingshot and that shows download speed 206KBPS and upload speed 86KBPS. One thing to note is: his telephone jack is in another room and thus required to connect the telephone extension cable to connect the computer in his room. He asked to slingshot and they said that, due to that long cable the broadband might be slow. Thus they suggested to get fix the telephone jack to his room(i.e. near the PC) or get the wireless modem. He got new dual core PC, 2GB RAM, 2GHz,Vista, 6months ago with new modem from slingshot which is supported Vista. He is complaining slow speed from the beginning. And slingshot people said that all the configurations are OK for his broadband. My questions are: Will wireless modem solve the problem? If yes, which wireless modem should be used? Is the long extension cable, can be one of the reasons for that much slow speed? Is there any thing else is required to consider on the computer side to improve the speed. Is it due to ISP is slingshot? If yes, which ISP is good? Please suggest, what can be done to improve the speed. Thanks, |

| 700563 | 2008-08-26 20:09:00 | The speed he is getting is not all that much slower than the 256kbps plan he is on. He probably would not notice much improvement in his internet use even if he was getting 256kbps. The extension lead could very well be causing the reduced speed. He can confirm that by moving the computer and connecting direct to the phone jack as a test. Has he got filters on all phones etc. It would not be worth getting a wireless modem just to try and get an extra 50kbps speed increase. Has he tried just rebooting the modem, this can sometimes resolve speed problems. |

Anyone with a broadband connection will always get at least 250kbps. If they don't than telecom would never have connected them in the first place as ADSL would have been just too marginal. |
