700381 2008-08-26 00:25:00 I want to set up some user accounts which will allow limited access for some users to a PC.

When I look at the Microsoft site there is information on how to create accounts and how to change pictures and passwords but I can't see how I restrict users to particular areas of the computer.

There seems to be default accounts where there is access to parts of the PC that has been preset which is ok to a point.

I want to be able to restrict some users to one programme only. (It is called Zion Worx and is similar to Power Point.) They need to be able to access all files that they need for that programme. There is no need for these users to access any other programme or any other area of the PC. I need to be able to give them permission to alter that programme. I want to have a commonly known user name and password available to that group of people.

There are some other accounts that I want to set up that give almost unrestricted access.

I want to be the administrator as I require access to everything.

Where can I find that information, please?:thanks

700383 2008-08-26 00:56:00 Gidday Speedy.

The PC uses 98. Hopefully I can restrict users in that version?

700384 2008-08-26 01:00:00 Not without some 3rd party program Speedy Gonzales (78)
700385 2008-08-26 01:14:00 A 3rd party programme that's free, hopefully. It's a church PC and as is usual, churches do not have lots of money. I was hoping to do it with no cost to them. Roscoe (6288)
700386 2008-08-26 01:19:00 Aha, not with 98. 98 is extremely insecure. :p Or should that be unsecure.

You'd be best to get some 3rd party app that could encrypt folders/files, with a password.

AxCrypt (www.axantum.com) would do the job, but I dunno if it works in 98.

I don't think what you're looking for exists for win98 unfortunately.

700387 2008-08-26 01:34:00 I am using it in a situation where there are virtually no computer experts, so perhaps the PC only needs to look as though it is secure. I'm certain that there is no-one that has access to the office that would consider trying to bypass the password.

The secretary has, at present, full access but that access is via a boot password which means that no-one else can access it at all. I wish to restrict other users as I mentioned.

700388 2008-08-26 01:40:00 The best option might be upgrading to Windows 2000, where you can set up users/passwords etc.

You may have found that with Win 98, you can press Esc at the logon box and you have full access to the PC...

You can't do that in Windows 2000 (or XP).

700389 2008-08-26 01:49:00 I assume that you mean that a password, then, is useless in 98? Roscoe (6288)
700390 2008-08-26 01:58:00 Hmm there is an option in 98 by the looks of it called System Policy Editor / Poledit (www.zisman.ca)

You have to add / install it

Which does something. Only thing is, you have to be careful it can screw things up. And it may not restrict everything

And as it says, you can lock yourself out !

There's info here (support.microsoft.com)
