700341 2008-08-25 22:21:00 Hi Folks. Granddaughter at college has been gifted a five-year old PC by another family member - with XP Pro and Word 2007.
She wants me to revert the Word 2007 to Word 2003 - says that she will be too busy using it for projects to bother learning the new system.
I have a legit copy of Word 2003 which I no longer use, having upgraded my own machine to 2007 some months ago.
She wants me to install my old 2003 on her machine.
Her 2007 is on Drive:C and her existing documents are on Drive: D.
Now: Anyone see any problems with the legal side of that?
Anyone done the same and had any practical problems?
Any help, as always, will be appreciated.

700342 2008-08-25 22:26:00 Shouldnt be a prob, since you've updated, its still on one PC isnt it Speedy Gonzales (78)
700343 2008-08-25 22:54:00 Yep, the one thing you NEED to be careful of, is to not install 2003 to the same directory as 2007.

Office 2007 installs to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office
I think 2003 installs to the same place.

I'd create a new folder in Prorgam Files, call it Office 2003 or something easy, and install it to there. Also don't install Outlook, if Outlook 2007 is already installed, as Outlook 2003/2007 don't play together.

I don't think there is anything else to be wary of.

700344 2008-08-25 23:12:00 Thanks Speedy & Wratty. I was thinking of deleting Word 2007 completely because she was not given the disk for it (she was given the XP disk). I just wondered if when I deleted the 2007, whether this would do any harm to the documents on the other drive - though I would probably back them up first. Any comment on dumping 2007 and then installing 2003? If it was mine I would probably just suck it and see, but I don't want to crap on her machine. Scouse (83)
700345 2008-08-25 23:16:00 It shouldnt remove the documents on the other hdd.

They just wont have any default program to open them.

Until you install 2003. Only prob you may have is what format did you save the documents as in 2007??

If docx, I dont think 2003 (or any previous version of Office), can read docx files.

That's the problem you'll run into, but M$ have released a compatibility pack (office.microsoft.com).

It will be tidier to completely remove 2007, then install 2003 with the compatibility pack, although I'd test the compatibility pack first, I don't know if it works properly. :)

Whatever way you decide to do it, it will be sweet.

The documents won't be touched.

700347 2008-08-25 23:34:00 Altho before you install the pack, as it says on the MS site install the high priortity updates for 2003 FIRST. Speedy Gonzales (78)
700348 2008-08-26 00:18:00 Thanks guys. Will give it a run tonight or tomorrow morning and let you know. Scouse (83)

The compatibility pack works fine. We have had all of our 3000+ PCs upgraded at work to contain the compatibility pack on top of Office 2003.

Good to hear Bill. Do you know if you had the updates installed on those PCs?
