700297 2008-08-26 07:16:00 One of these (www.pbtech.co.nz) is a laptop sized external DVD drive requires no external power, just USB connection.

This (www.pbtech.co.nz) is a larger slightly cheaper desktop type drive in an enclosure, but requires power via an AC adaptor.

Both less then $160

700298 2008-08-26 10:22:00 Wratterus: a) Haven't got the expertise to install it, b) the one you referenced is +R and I've got a stack of -R's 'cos of the one that went wrong c) plus I've had a quote from another "approved" Toshiba service person saying that a mullti optical drive for my model could be as much as $700!! which, unfortunately makes that price in your reference look a bit suspect, but thanks for your input

Not suspect, that's not unusual for prices to be like that with manufacturers parts. Be comforted that they will be making at least 700% on that part. Where I work we sell that part, or it's equivalent, for approx $150.

I install those drives in laptops all the time, never had one not work. The faceplates are standard, your one will come off and fit onto the new drive. It will work with DVD -R and +R too.

As for installing them, it's normally about a 5 minute job, often one screw on the bottom of the laptop needs to come out, occasionally it's under the keyboard.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it, your local friendly computer repair shop should install and test it for $20 - $40.
Just trynna save you a lot of money, and you know you don't wanna lug a full size DVD RW with you everywhere. ;)
