700141 2008-08-25 05:11:00 I have an Acer Aspire Windows XP Home Edition and when I start it up, it comes to a menu says something like "There was a problem with Windows starting up" and it says to select one of the following

1)Safe Mode
2)Safe Mode with Networking
3)Safe Mode With Command Prompt
4)Last Known Good Configuration
5)Start Windows Normally

All 3 Safe Modes show a list of file names (Here is an example of one)

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)/WINDOWS/System32/Drivers/NDIS.sys
or
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)/WINDOWS/System32/Drivers/mup.sys

If I try Last Good Config or Start Normally, It shows the loading bar that sort of looks like this [ --- ] and then there is a click and the monitor shows no signal and restarts, showing the same screen again.

I have given all the info I can think of.

BTW The PC came with XP installed, not upgraded or downgraded.

If possible, I would like to keep the files that are on the computer

Please help

700142 2008-08-25 05:16:00 When the computer starts, but before the Windows menu comes up, hit F8. (Hitting it repeatedly once the computer is on helps.) Select 'Disable automatic restart on system failure'. Let it boot, and see if a BSOD (blue screen of death) comes up. We'll see what's happening from there.

BTW showing file names in Safe Mode is normal - it's booting without the fancy boot screen. :)

700143 2008-08-25 05:22:00 Ok i'll do it now but i don't like the sound of "Blue Screen Of Death" Ghostdemon (14120)
700144 2008-08-25 05:24:00 Blame Microsoft they invented it :D

It'll tell us if its crashing when it restarts

And hopefully why

700145 2008-08-25 05:24:00 It's a blue screen with a lot of techy error details on it. ;)

It was named 'death' because it meant you lost all unsaved work (you have to restart).

EDIT: Snap!

700146 2008-08-25 05:25:00 Ok There is a Blue Screen....of Death :( Ghostdemon (14120)
700147 2008-08-25 05:26:00 Tell us what the stop error says, and the name of the file (under it, if its says the name of a file or driver)

Or what it says on the screen

What do you mean by all "Unsaved Work"?

700149 2008-08-25 05:29:00 What do you mean by all "Unsaved Work"?

ie: If you were doing a document in word, when it crashed, whatever is gone.

You'll have to do it again

700150 2008-08-25 05:29:00 Unsaved work = things you haven't saved. :stare:

EDIT: Great minds think alike. :D
