460301 2006-06-04 04:40:00 I was just reading an article about "captain copyright" ripping off a wikipedia article, and after following a few links, I came across this (www.archive.org) (17mb WMV)

it's great for a laugh, and it reminded me that games used to come with decent manuals.

Yeah, but did anyone ever actually read them?

460303 2006-06-04 08:19:00 Usually they don't come with a printed manual these days. You often find a manual on the CD though.

All you have to do is use your paper and ink to print it. :-)

Its just not the same. The first game I bought (Dark Reign) came with a small book (with a fancy embossed cover & everything) that had detaled information on every unit.

460305 2006-06-06 02:44:00 Some games came with a manual which was the piracy prevention. To play the game, you had to turn to a page randomly selected by the programme and answer a question about it, like "what colour is the first word on the page". This was quite effective, unless you had access to a colour copier, and even then it was probbaly cheaper to buy the game.

It also gave an incentive to learn to read ...

460306 2006-06-06 02:58:00 Strangely enough, I recently bought MS Digital Image Suite 206 and it came with quite a neat 180 page manual, including 20 pages of "tips and tricks" for taking digital photographs. Unusual these days. Scouse (83)
