459009 2006-05-30 00:03:00 with the recent announcement of mtv in new zealand which will offer 24/7 entertainment shows I think free to air broadcasters will start offering more high quality programming even during the day on weekdays and weekeneds and even at 3am in the morning. The free to air broadcasters generally have informercials at 3am in the morning and during the day on weekeneds they have all these repeats of shows and low rating shows. Well because mtv will have top rating shows even at 3am in the morning, i'm sure free to air broadcasters will have to up their game. mtv has a huge budget that would exceed any free to air nz broadcasters. You can read the story of mtv coming to new zealand at.

459010 2006-05-30 00:40:00 You're talking about the new Sky channels, right?
The idea of TVNZ quaking in their boots is based on the assumption that everyone has or wants Sky.

Some of us have more important things to spend our money on like... I dunno.. feeding our kids & will happily settle for whatever free programming we can get.

Nice try.

459012 2006-05-30 01:34:00 Well i read that about 600,000 or so people have skytv. You have to reliaze that not every single person has sky but most households have it. There could be a family of 2 adults, 2children, and they will only have 1 skytv decoder in their house probably in the lounge. free to air depends on advertising revenue so if ratings drops there advertising revenue will drop too.

459015 2006-05-30 01:42:00 if you are suggesting that a household with teenagers (the MTV market segment) will allow those teenagers to dictate the channel viewed, when those actually paying for the Sky TV want to watch something different, reduce your 600,000 down to just a mere few % of households.

In other words its a complete non event as far as competition goes.

If you're Jafa, take a drive through Otara or pretty much any South Auckland suburb & count the number of satellite dishes attached to the houses.

Then go their schools & see how many kids have no money for lunch, shoes, school trips etc.

Very sad.

or we might have a good job and afford both broadband and sky tv, its not that expensive.

459018 2006-05-30 05:15:00 I pretty much gave up tv for the internet and watch my favourite shows like Battlestar Galactice long before they're shown on New Zealand TV . I don't even think they've shown series 2 here yet . Otherwise vidcats like DLTV and Revision3 keep me pretty well entertained .

Sky TV for sports mainly, especially the World Cup .

Try Cannons Creek/Waitangirua if you want to see a lot of satelite dishes in one neighbourhood .

The people who whinge on here about hearing sports results before they're on free tv aren't from that part of Porirua I bet .
