| 1430253 | 2016-12-26 08:55:00 | We've just moved overseas and connected to the internet with the local company who hand out preset and fairly locked down modems (adsl or VDSL, not sure. I'd like to connect to different DNS and I don't have the option of changing that in the modem. I have my old router with me which is already set up with dns and other options from before we left NZ. I'm wondering whether it might be possible to use the modem just to get internet but connect the router to it and use all the settings from that? If so what settings should I be looking for to change in either device? Is this possible? I'm picking that even if it is it might still be too locked down but at this stage I don't know where to look to try. Before we left NZ I had this similar setup work successfully where this same router was connected to our friend's spark modem. Router is an Asus RT56U (from memory -it's 1am and I'm lying I bed :) ) and the modem is an Arcadyan(???) or something which I've never heard of. I'll get all the details I can inthe morning. Any suggestions? I'd really like to get this going if I can :) Cheers, Mike. |

| 1430254 | 2016-12-26 18:48:00 | It will be difficult. You need to put the password and the email address which is supplied by the internet service provider you are connecting to into your router otherwise you will be unable to make a connection. | CliveM (6007) | ||

My router is not a modem, so I'd expect to still use the old modem to make that connection. Cheers, Mike. |

| 1430256 | 2016-12-26 19:35:00 | OK. I guess that you should just suck it and see then. You will still need to enter the correct information into your router. It handles the connection. | CliveM (6007) | ||
| 1430257 | 2016-12-26 21:03:00 | If it ONLY the router then it shouldn't be a problem. The Modem is what's connects to the internet, this is when using adsl or VDSL. Look at it like ( in real simple terms) like a power multibox with 6 outlets, one in (the power) 6 plugs out. The Router connects to the Modem, which then splits the incoming internet connection to other ports, when you use the router you'll get a LAN address, where as the Modem will have the IP address from the ISP. Where all the above will be different is with the actual Arcadyan Modem. Just looked them up, and according to their site they all appear to come with a inbuilt Router. Since no model number has been given its really only a guess as to what you have. ?? |

| 1430258 | 2016-12-26 21:50:00 | The box says Model VRV8019AW22 VDSL Modem. At my friend's house in NZ I connected my router into their ADSL2 modem (Spark supplied one) and managed to get everything working through the router, including the router's DNS settings. I didn't change anything on the Spark modem. I'd like to do the same thing here but when I connect my router I cannot see the internet through it, only through the modem. I had thought there might be a way to tell the modem to just be the internet connection device, and let the router do all the work, handle all the other settings etc. Cheers, Mike. |

My router, which didn't have modem capabilities or whatever has all these settings I need. I would like to use the VDSL modem to connect to the internet but somehow use the router for DNS etc. I have successfully had this working in the past in NZ using spark modem to connect but then use all my router settings, but I don't know how to set this up with this modem. I am not in NZ anymore and there is a bit of language barrier, particularly talking about technical stuff :) otherwise I'd just call the isp If there's a setting in the modem (or router) I should look food to enable this setup, this is what I'm hoping to find out. Cheers, Mike. |
