| 1428292 | 2016-11-02 22:07:00 | Current wisdom/theory is that a windscreen fire may have occurred. They are initiated by the windscreen heater (a conductive but transparent layer in the laminated windscreen) and have been relatively common, with 39 fires (40 if MH370 is included) between 2002 and 2014, 8 of them in Boeing 777s. The predictable pilot action would be to shut off the power source, however that also shuts down the satellite transponder, causing the aircraft to disappears off the radar (so to speak). Even my 20 year old car has a separate switch to turn off rear screen demsiter(heater) turn off screen heater, also turns off transponder: not well thought out :-) latest update edition.cnn.com |
