1429862 2016-12-15 07:46:00 Just adding to above. I Was actually installing Lubuntu on a HDD.

Now I have results.

Same PC only difference was hard Drives. ( seagate 80GB SATA drives)

Now stay focused BM or again you'll get lost.

From completely off to fully working:

Booting W10 - 54 Seconds
Booting Mint - 1.15 (1 minute 15 seconds)
Booting Lubuntu 40 Seconds.

On my workshop Computer Lubuntu is quicker and boots faster than MINT.

Your results may differ.

YOU asked about Xtra-PC, you get answers from several people, obviously not what you really want to hear . Haven't actually brought one have you, and now asking if they are OK ?

Now pay attention.

I asked: Anybody out there used one of THESE things?

Just wondered if one might come in handy?

So far it appears nobody has actually used one, but a couple including your good self, knows everything about them.

And then as a bonus, I get a speal about how fast your Workshop computer is. :clap

1429864 2016-12-15 08:43:00 Hi BM, CD's will never beat electronics or for speed. The reason for the CD is you can run it as a trial, without adding anything to your HD. If you like it you can do an install off the same CD which gives you HD speed. Laggard (17509)

As you said you had googled them yourself ( just like I and others did), and discovered that all they are is a linux OS, Lubuntu on a USB drive, which you can make yourself for free ( assuming you have a spare USB drive). Depending on a persons Knowledge, it doesn't take much to figure out how it works.

Comparing Lubuntu and Mint on the same PC (installed) lubuntu booted faster and ran crisper/better.

As for my workshop PC. I can guarantee its different spec to yours. That PC is slow compared to others spec wise. The Specs were put simply as to what was being used to time.

AS its already been mentioned a lower spec PC could boot slower, where as a higher spec faster. That's why I also put your results may differ. If for example your laptop was an i7, 16 GB RAM the speeds I posted would look slow in comparison. If I booted my office PC from the same USB drive it would be faster as the Computer is higher spec.

In Fact BRB, Ill try it and post back the speed.

OK did them, Booting from the USB drive, keeping in mind you have to go into the boot menu on start and select USB drive to boot from, so that uses up extra time. This PC has a faster CPU, higher Memory and a SSD HDD.

Lubuntu on USB 35 Seconds from pressing start to usable.

Windows 10 - 25 Seconds From Pressing start to usable.

IF Lubuntu was on the HDD installed it would be faster.

1429866 2016-12-15 18:30:00 What a joke. You're booting an O/S off a flash drive. And? pctek (84)
1429867 2016-12-15 18:51:00 Just to clear something up BM. The comment:

You may not have watched it, because if you did you will have seen for yourself.

If you didn't watch it, scroll down the linked page there's a video in the "How Does it Work" section.

As it was mentioned, by 1101 ( I think) things like that have been done Via CD. I personally have been using Knoppix on a CD for years to recover data if a windows PC was to badly damaged.

1429869 2016-12-15 20:05:00 Cinnamon uses a lot more resources than LXDE/LXQT?
Not really news...

Xtra-PC?
Probably a couple of clowns who had a fiddle with USB booting and are commercialising the result.
Good luck to them.

I used to have a mint Xfce on USB key with a save file (option in Unetbootin), it worked well.

I see Lubuntu is not using LXDE but switched to LXQT in January.

I agree Laggard, but what surprised me was the difference, which unfortunately could put people off installing on the grounds that working off the DVD was so slow. Pity really.

Not so .

Had you read my post properly you will have seen that some Google explanations say that it is "Basically" a Lubuntu system with some command line stuff replaced by GUI's . That appears to be the twist, it's a Modified Lubuntu, or so some say .

Whether they know, or are just guessing too, is another question .
