| 1429852 | 2016-12-15 04:21:00 | I usually think its a good idea to put linux on older computers to give them some added life. Lubuntu is an OK choice, I prefer LXLE which is based on Lubuntu. You can use newer computers if you want to see fast as well. I assume Xtra PC just makes installing the OS easier? I honestly don't know what other added value they could offer you. |

| 1429853 | 2016-12-15 04:22:00 | Struth, an interesting cross section of opinions already. But to clarify the situation, yes I too have spent time on Google and have found various opinions as to its usefulness, hence my lead post. Reading between the lines, so-far nobody here has actually had any first hand knowledge of the product. Thats fine, but one report I read claimed it worked fine, it was just another version of Linux, basically Lubuntu, that had been GUIfied (to coin a word) and one could do pretty much the same with a programme like Puppy Linux on a Thumb Drive. Unfortunately, the writer didnt go into any detail as to pros & cons in relation to the two. Pity. But to address some of the existing posts: Lawrence: Be far better getting a low capacity SSD which would give it treble the performance pricespy.co.nz Sounds good, I have a spare 2.5 64 Gb SSD doing nothing, but Im "Gun Shy" when it comes to reliably booting from these things via USB connector. Further discussion on this possibility would interest me. :) 1101: BM , given your 10 anti-fanboy status , could be just your cup o tea You must be Clairvoyant, yes I must lower my expectations, but if I get in my car in the morning I expect it to start, not run the battery flat trying, being unable to because the petrol tank has been filled with water overnight. If you get my drift. ;) |

| 1429855 | 2016-12-15 04:41:00 | Well this was a challenge to good to pass up :nerd: Esp since its beer oclock :D. Downloaded Lubuntu X64, made a USB bootable drive - Its an Old Dell. Here are the system Specs - A REAL power grunter ;) 7737 Timed the boot process of Windows 10 to fully working, then shut down, booted from the USB drive to working. Thought Sheeeeeeeeeeet had to get a stop watch it was so close. From Completely OFF to Fully Running W10 = 54 Seconds Lubuntu /USB Drive 53 Seconds BUT on the other side -- BM if you wanted to use or try Lubuntu, I found it VERY quick and VERY snappy running from the USB drive, FAR better than mint fully installed on a drive. Edited: ISOs down near the bottom of this page help.ubuntu.com OR http://lubuntu.net/ |

| 1429856 | 2016-12-15 05:06:00 | I assume Xtra PC just makes installing the OS easier? I honestly don't know what other added value they could offer you. Being as green as grass on Linux, I hadnt even heard of Lubuntu until today, but from what Ive read, it seems they have added a user friendly Graphic Interface to Lubuntu and one writer spoke of Open Office being an addition, (not Libre). Interesting stuff. However, in my case I would like to stick with Linux Mint, that you and others recommended for me in another thread. Im rapped in it and one mate that lives miles away cant stop singing its praises. In his case he installed it himself, or so he says, and all is good. Honestly, this guy would score minus something out of 10 when it comes to anything IT. Mind you, he is a multi millionaire, through Land Development, but I digress. Now back on the subject. Is there a good way to set Mint up on a Thumb Drive that will work along the same lines as this Xtra-PC? Ive tried booting and running from a DVD, as recommended by some people, but honestly it is far too slow that way and doesnt give the programme justice. |

Or know the differance between a USB or CD/DVD http://unetbootin.github.io/ You dont even need a ISO you can select your version from the drop down menu and it downloads and burns it for you. Wouldn't use mint though - Its SLOWWWWWWWW |

I have mint on a bootable USB its only an old 2Gb stick that I used to have Puppy on, went to use it the other night to test something and found I had changed it to Mint. Worked just fine but would do what I needed it to. Which was mount a Windows drive so I could try and remove the password. |

Wouldn't use mint though - Its SLOWWWWWWWW OK, to firm up on this I have found MINT (Cinnamon) off a DVD as slow as Windows 10. They can stand in the corner together. However, once installed Mint flies by comparison. For what it's worth though, I'm on record as saying, and I'll say again, I was quite impressed by Win10 on my initial changeover. However, a zillion failed updates, and a few upgrades, it's stuffed here and time to go. Which raises the point of you laughing about your old Dell, Duel Core, with only 4Gb if memory. "Have you any idea of how many computers there are out there that can't meet those specifications?" Well there ain't much point producing Aviation Fuel for cars that won't run on it. |

| 1429861 | 2016-12-15 07:28:00 | Here we go again with your inbult hatred :groan: BM read the bloody post correctly. The ONLY time W10 was mentioned was at boot times compared to booting lubuntu from a USB Drive, they were basically identical. At no other time has W10 been mentioned. I Said mint Was SLOW COMPARED TO LUBUNTU on a USB drive. Maybe you are the 1% that mentioned that needs every thing spelt out as you're to thick to understand anything else. So here we go -- booting and running from a USB drive, lubuntu was Faster than MINT when it was installed on a actual HDD. By rights a removable drive SHOULD be slower, but with lubuntu it wasn't I just timed boots again, this time on the same PC. MINT on a HDD, installed -- 1.15 ( that's 1 minute 15 seconds) Lubuntu from USB - 53 Seconds. Got it now !!! here, also fixed your previous comment; Being as thick as two short planks on Linux |
