1429274 2016-11-29 20:30:00 Phew 8 mb of ram that was a lot in '95 . I started with one 1mb but quickly upgraded to 2mb, cost about $100 for installation

I've been archiving our Community newsletters and I came across this from 1995. Reminds me to never complain about hardware prices. Also note that the ad included tape backup and a fax modem.

1429275 2016-11-30 10:12:00 My first DIY 'puter had 128 bytes of ram and a 4 bit processor. I had expanded it from the original rather puny ram. (Ram was fearfully expensive stuff.)
The first computer I worked on had 120 rather convoluted words of memory on a hard disc that had fixed individually positioned on initial set-up read and write heads that were out in the breeze, with a carefully set 0.001" head-to-disc clearance. We thought it was quite clever, but not as good as core memory LOL. That same beast had valves (thyratrons) in some of the peripherals, and used germanium transistors exclusively in the processor circuitry, the only silicon was in the power supply. Not an ic in the beast, no plug in boards either. Logic repairs meant soldering. Ah, the good old days.

Sky. But no doubt you can find it on one of the view online places. It was excellent.

1429278 2016-12-04 20:10:00 Our first PC was a BBC and later an Archimedes. Our son worked after school for the local (Birkenhead) seller of BBC and asked for payment in floppy discs, which he got many of. Apparently the makers of the BBC are now involved in some way with the production of the Raspberry Pi Misty (368)
