2016-11-02 04:56:00 | From memory, when you configure Chromecast you have connect both Chromecast (thru whatever device you are using) and the dongle (connected to your TV) to the same wireless network. The Chromecast app walks you through that process. So what 1101 said above seems to be correct - the dongle and the device you are using talk to each other via your wireless network. Having said that I notice that my Nexus 9 appears to go to sleep whilst the video is playing. | John H (8) | |

2016-11-02 07:17:00 | How it works depends on what you're doing. If you're casting a local tab from a laptop, it's naturally going to have to play from the laptop. If you're casting from your Cellphone, say a YouTube video, the Chromecast then re-starts the connection directly to YouTube, and your phone is simply a "remote" that can go to sleep, save battery etc :) ^^ This. There are also apps that play files from the phone/pc as well. Some people seem to think all Chromecast does is cast a tab from the browser. I hardly ever do that.

Originally the first one, the "stick" was that price in NZD Then the upgraded one in the shape of a "puck" came out which was basically a lot gruntier and more powerful came out (Better WiFi too), and it became that same price. Some people seem to think all Chromecast does is cast a tab from the browser. I hardly ever do that. Yeah, pretty much never do that. Plex, Play Music, YouTube, Google Photos... All MUCH more likely to be used! |

2016-11-02 19:16:00 | I think that I have only ever once successfully cast a tab from a browser, and that was after installing Web Video Caster the other day for a specific video. We use Chromecast mostly for Netflix, Lightbox, and YouTube. When we bought our Samsung TV in 2012 it was called a Smart TV with lots of features that would have meant Chromecast was almost unnecessary. However, 2012 was a "cut off" year for Samsung - gradually with each system update Samsung has removed most of our so-called features so our TV has become just a dumb display box - Chromecast has filled in most of the gaps with TVNZ On Demand, YouTube, Netflix etc.

2016-11-02 23:06:00 | How are you casting TVNZ Ondemand. From a PC , cell phone or tablet?? TVNZ have tied things up with android. You can only watch on the android platform by using their app. And you can't cast using their app. They claim to be working towards casting for the TVNZ Ondemand app... The only way I have found to cast TVNZ Ondemand is to use my laptop with the Chromecast extension to the Chrome browser. I guess that means I have been casting a tab from a browser on more than the single occasion I referred to above...

2016-11-02 23:06:00 | So the thing is that casting the TVNZ On Demand does it as a "tab casting" (Unless they now support Chromecast specifically? I wasn't aware they did, but to be honest I pretty much never use it.) Casting YouTube from your browser is different, it doesn't do a tab-cast as such, but a proper Chromecast remote control where the Chromecast itself will stream directly from YouTube. The easiest way to know which it's doing: Close the tab Does it keep playing? Yes - Then it properly supports Chromecast and the Chromecast was streaming direct No - Then you were just casting the tab, which keeps the Laptop awake and downloads the video first to the laptop and then it "mirrors" the tab across to the Chromecast

2016-11-02 23:17:00 | That is correct. On android, TVNZ Ondemand only plays on the device, using their proprietary app. On the laptop it casts through the Chrome browser via the Chromecast extension. YouTube app on android has the Chromecast icon and functionality built into the YouTube app and it casts directly from there.
