1428767 2016-11-14 02:14:00 I was at the Kerikeri RSA on Sunday (don't ask!) and paid for a round with the credit card. After I removed the card the terminal said "checking connection" then "connecting 1200" (or phrases to that effect). Do EFTPOS terminals really still connect at 1200 baud, or is that just the maximum speed the firmware can display so it actually means "at least 1200, but I can't really tell"? Tony (4941)
1428768 2016-11-14 02:58:00 As far as I'm aware most EFTPOS terminals are now IP-based. If they are still using dial-up terminals then I'd be unsurprised if there's been no change in the technologies used in many years. I have heard that dial-up EFTPOS terminals will be phased out in the next 12 - 18 months, though I'm not sure now where I heard that... inphinity (7274)
1428769 2016-11-14 08:48:00 They are only sending text data, no real need for much speed. Sometimes things stay the same for a very long time purely because there is no need to change. Until eventually the hardware wears out and change is forced.
You'd be surprised how recently I was organising to START removing <= 64 kbps equipment that's been in faithful service for decades. Many services just don't need much data.

"Pay Plus PAX S80. It is a one-piece countertop terminal option capable of operating over the internet for faster transaction processing, and equipped with dial-up connectivity for back-up and peace of mind."

1200, LOL, haven't seen that in a while.

1428771 2016-11-14 23:03:00 If a merchant is still using dial-up EFTPOS, the dial-up part of the connection goes to some of the old 3Com boxes which were used for 56k internet and then IP to the banks.
However, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and I guess there could be some old terminals out there running at slower speeds.

1428772 2016-11-15 00:32:00 I actually sent an email to Verifone this morning asking the question. Will they reply? Probably not. Tony (4941)
1428773 2016-11-15 01:04:00 Part of the reason is that some sports clubs are only open 15 or so hours per week and cannot justify the cost of broad band. There is an additional charge of around $5 per month for retaining the old system over and above the normal eftpos charges. It seems to work OK with our bowling club. Arnie (6624)

It seems to work OK with our bowling club. That sounds plausible, together with the fact that I suspect their committee actually don't know what the options are. :) Tony (4941)

Patience, your reply is travelling slowly down the dialup line........
