| 1428597 | 2016-11-09 21:06:00 | I have just watched a documentary on Brasil and although it was entitled "Brazil After the Olympics" it was noticeable that the Brasilians spelt it Brasil. So which is correct? I would say that the correct spelling is the way that it is spelt in Brasil. | Roscoe (6288) | ||

It is the Anglo-Saxon prerogative to spell foreign names as they see fit. :) Eg, why spell Florence Firenze when everyone knows what is meant, even the Italians.........then again the French, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan and Filipinos spell London as Londres. |

In every article they are all saying the same thing, depends on the language being used, both are correct. Essentially, in the English language, Brazil is*normally*and properly spelt with a “z” and in Portuguese it is spelled with an “s.” |

| 1428603 | 2016-11-10 00:12:00 | This is something the grammar & spelling zealouts are allways quiet on bastardize place names country names as much as you want but god help you if you use Americanized spelling double standards It should allways be as in the actual country, that is the only correct spelling and correct name . Its the same as spelling someones personal name and address wrong, just because you can. Or even making up a new surname for them :) |

That is being very pedantic, it just doesn't work that way, eg. most European countries frequently spell other country's names and place names in their own way as they have for generations, not the way of the country in question. It is not peculiar to the English language. |
