701195 2008-08-29 03:17:00 Got a 40 GB WDC XP ntfs drive that chkdsk /f seems to have trouble repairing. Gets stuck at 3% of the file index check. Sits there for ages and finally finishes. But it doesn't fix it as this process is repeated on another run. Earlier runs it said it deleted two indexes on a specified file number at this 3% point.

Any better (free if poss!) non-destructive file system checkers/repairers out there? Seem to remember WDC having such tools but things there seem to have changed. The Data Lifeguard seems to be a resident logger, now.

TIA.

Run the WD diag tool, not Data Lifeguard.

I think DLG Diagnostic v5.04c is the current one. If you can't find it on WD's website, get the UBCD (www.ultimatebootcd.com). It has everything except the kitchen sick.

I'd say 99% it's faulty.

Get a Seagate next time.
