701162 2008-08-29 02:54:00 I have just purchased 2 External Sata Hard Drives. 250 and 500GBs.

Plugging these in through USB2 to my PC and I get the Pop ups (Found new hardware and Your hardware is installed and ready to use)
In "Safely Remove" they show up fine as they do in Systems/Disc Drives?)

My problem,
In "My Computer" there is no sign of them, so they are unable to be used???

On phoning the local computer shop, the tech there told me there should be no issues in using Sata External HDDs through USB to a older pc that has IDE hard drive as "C" drive.
Is this correct as I may need to get these back to the supplier asap if I have bought the wrong hard drives.
Thanks for any advise:)

701163 2008-08-29 02:59:00 My guess is that they have not been formatted yet.

Do the following...
Plug in and power on the device(s)

Click on the Start Button.

Click RUN

Type the following... diskmgmt.msc

Press enter.

Look for anything that says unformatted partition or something like that. If there is, it needs to be formatted.

Edit:
It might say Unallocated!

701164 2008-08-29 03:26:00 Right on Bob!

Did as you said and they are both working as expected.
I didn't bother formatting earlier as the instructions with the HDDs said they have been done in factory. Can't believe everything you read it seems:)

Thank you very much Bob:)
Much appreciated ...
