701080 2008-08-28 19:42:00 I am running a new Toshiba Portege with Vista Business. I need to install a dial-up connection utilising a USB modem BUT it doesnt recognize the modem. In fact it doesnt even recognise the internal modem that is on the laptop. I can see both modems in device manager and query them. Have uninstalled and reinstalled them and all seems fine until you try and set up a dial up connection when it comes up as no modem available?
Thanks for any assitance as is very frustraing.

701081 2008-08-29 05:40:00 Hi there. Are there any settings that you can tweak under "Configurations" of the modem?

Networking > Right-click on your network adaptor, properties > Configure

Cheers :)

Do you have Vista drivers for either modem?

How to rectify the problem is another question, perhaps do a search of your Vista install (or recovery) disk for the file and reinstalling it (in the original place after renaming the old file); sounds as if your Vista install may be damaged, possibly a repair or reinstall may be needed (you have made/burnt your recovery disk/s?) .
Or perhaps use System Restore (go back a restore point or two, see if that helps) .

From Toshiba site (not specific to your machine, read the manual first!):

How Do I use the Recovery Disc included with my notebook?

NOTE: Please ensure you have backed up all important information from your system before proceeding with this process .

ALL DATA will be erased on the Hard Drive if you proceed .

a . Please insert the recovery disk into the CD/DVD Rom and Switch off the machine .

b . Repeatedly press the F12 key as you turn on the machine to display the boot menu .

c . Select the DVD/CR ROM option from the boot menu

d . Follow the step by step instructions

e . For further information please refer to the information from your user manual .

If you own a Satellite A200 or Satellite P200 use the following instructions to run a recovery on your notebook .

Note these models come with a hidden partition on your hard disc drive . We would recommend making a back up copy of the operating system before beginning this process .

a . Turn off the notebook before starting .

b . Hold down the zero (numerical zero) key down .

c . Press the power button to turn on while still holding the zero key until the loading files or ram disk image appear on the screen .

d . Follow the Toshiba recovery wizard screen .

e . For further information please refer to the information from your user manual .

Dont forget to back-up your data first  :)
Alternatively, take it back to the dealer/vendor and complain, bitterly :badpc:
