700792 2008-08-27 05:01:00 Once bitten....

I use Ubuntu 8.04
I have a new Dlink 604t router bought from Ascent and I would like to do a firmware upgrade on it.

The reason I have a new one is that I managed to totally stuff the last one doing a firmware upgrade.(the upgrade got interrupted)

Now, with the new one, it needs a firmware upgrade because all of the linux chat programs (pidgin, kopete, etc.) crash it.I really have checked this and it seems to be the case with this router.

Now, after having spent all that money on a new router, I am a little wary of doing it again but I would like to get pidgin back.

Can anyone give me any advice on this?

700793 2008-08-27 05:17:00 How did the upgrade get interrupted the first time?

Is the old router the same as the new one?

700794 2008-08-27 05:24:00 The router is the same make and model, but a newer version. It has firmware between the old router and the newest available.

The plug got pulled out on last upgrade.

700795 2008-08-27 06:41:00 Should be easy to do in linux, it upgrades via web interface so all you need is a browser. Just don't pull the cord out this time!

on another note, did you ever try to recover the old router? there are instructions and a program on dlink's website on how to do this (although I think you'd need windows to run the program)

I managed to recover a DSL-502T that way once

700796 2008-08-27 06:50:00 I did try to use the "corrupted source" image but the program couldn't get any response from the router and timed out after ten minutes or so. joemac (9739)
700797 2008-08-27 10:17:00 Okay, I did it with no disasters so far..... I even have pidgin going again

seemed almost too easy.....

seemed almost too easy . . . . .

Well it usually is, provided the power cord stays connected

You'd probably need to use a Jtag interface cable then and do a recovery manually if you were really keen

700799 2008-08-27 10:31:00 Thanks Agent, but I have a working connection now and IRC so I will stop tinkering for a while. I originally tried to do the upgrade because it kept dropping the connection and the new router seems to have reduced the number of them, but there was a glitch in the shipped firmware (....t01.20070329) that killed the router when any chat programs tried to access the interweb.
