462441 2006-06-12 05:27:00 We're just south of ChCh, snow everywhere, power went off around 5am and only came back on about 3pm. Alarm at fire station went just before our power went off, so some idiot must have hit a pole. :groan:

Main South road littered with cars - drivers learning hard lessons about speeding on roads in this kind of weather.
Spent the day in bed to keep warm. :)
Blue sky is appearing on the horizon so all good in my little world.

Hope Auckland is OK now. They certainly had it rough.

462442 2006-06-12 05:40:00 I was in the middle of posting when it disappeared. Friends in Auckland emailed to say there were huge winds and downtown Auckland had lost power, so goodbye servers....It wasn't all of Auckland, apparently West Auckland was fairly ok apart from windy.

My friend in Ngapara (30km west of Oamaru) had actual real thick snow. And power cuts. She's never had proper snow.
Here in Wyndham it was cool in the morning, then the sun came out got up to 9 degrees then clouded over again and its now raining. But not even a frost. And no winds. No sleet for that matter either which was the forecast....but then I've noticed they seem to be consistently wrong with our forecasts.

I live in Papakura, and as far as we know there was no failure (apart from a split second one this morning that caused my computer to restart! :) I wasn't using it at the time - XP was showing the login screen, waiting for my password.)

462444 2006-06-12 06:04:00 I just finished buying a couple of bits from The Warehouse and Foodtown in Sylvia Park and was getting ready for work when ... POOF! Out went the electricity. So I doubt anyone made much of a profit today.

Funny thing is, the street I'm in over in Papatoetoe, South Auckland was not affected by the power crisis at all. Therefore I could enjoy a nice hot shower all day if I wanted... :D

Though just up the road, Hunters Plaza and MIT were presumably down.

But it was ironic that we rely on electricity do so much now these days. E.g phone, Net, Traffic, Radio, EFTPOS. Everything we take for granted.

462447 2006-06-12 06:15:00 My two UPS's have been cutting in and out every few minutes all day, protecting the PCs from the the numerous power system disturbances caused by 150mm+ of snow locally. But no actual "power cuts".

Sky reception disappeared because our dish was full of snow.

Its warmed up now though, to 2.6°C outside.

I am guessing Sylvia Park did not have any traffic problems today then since there was no power :p

In that case we could have gone out for lunch & headed over that way.
