461897 2006-06-09 11:02:00 Hot, nutritious, and even with a touch of decadence. I made soup tonight and it struck me how inexpensively we can eat in this country:

Leftover chicken bones from the other day's roast: Free
Water: Negligable
Can of Italian tomatoes: 80c
Handful of mixed herbs from the garden: Free
Onion: 10c
Celery: 25c
Garlic: 5c
Salt and pepper: 10c
Two freshly baked bread rolls: $1.00
Butter: 20c
Electricity: 20c

Chicken bones and seasonings simmered for a few hours to make a stock. Strained. Saute vegetables, and add to stock. Simmer a bit longer.

Served with warm buttered rolls.

Serves two.

Cost: Less than $1.50 each.

Would be even cheaper using bread instead of rolls, and margarine instead of butter.

461898 2006-06-09 11:09:00 But you had to buy the chicken at some stage to get the bones...

But nevertheless, well done!

Correct, but that $10.00 size 18 chook gave us 2 full meals, plus several sandwiches.

But yeah, factor in the initial costs and level it out, the average would be more than my buck fifty.

461902 2006-06-09 11:41:00 We substitute the can of tomatoes for a packet of noodles and hey presto, a very cheap lunch....but good effort though!

461903 2006-06-09 21:42:00 Ever heard of the hooligans in USA who get their food - occasionally unopened, unspoilt food - for free right from the dumpster?

Meal Cost = $ 0.00

Cheers :)

Not quite accurate, divide chicken by total paid, minus previous % consumed.
Water - can be checked from your water rates bill unless like us, you use bore water.
Herbs - well did you buy seeds or plants at some point? Do you make your own compost or buy extra fertilisers/manure etc? Probably not a huge cost but still not free.

I spend about $200 - $240 per fortnight on groceries. Plus $250 3 times a year for meat.
So our food bill isn't huge. The grocereies of course include more than just edible items.
