| 461727 | 2006-06-08 21:20:00 | What is it with food manufacturers? I bought a packet of bacon and noted it has a label on it stating "Gluten Free". Hello? Its meat. Gluten: A protein group found in wheat and other flours that forms the structure of the bread dough. Also annoying is lolly packets they say Fat Free - yes, they may be, but you eat enough of them and you'll still get fat. |

There is no Gluten in plain meat, fish, chicken, bacon, ham off the bone and meats that are frozen or canned but with no sauce . These meat products may contain Gluten, products prepared with breadcrumbs or batter, most sausages and other processed meats (including smallgoods), thickened soups, meat pies and frozen meals . |

| 461731 | 2006-06-08 23:40:00 | Maybe the pigs that were made into your bacon were not fed on wheat? On the other hand maybe the aforsaid pigs ate lollies and that is what them marketable so you can have your bacon. Who knows. |

| 461732 | 2006-06-08 23:47:00 | "Gluten Free" is to take your mind off the amount of water in the bacon. Random label here has Pork 88% bet most of the rest is water. | PaulD (232) | ||
| 461733 | 2006-06-09 00:20:00 | Any sort of processed food (bacon included) could have had gluten added to it in some way, shape or form. Eg. "ham" quite often now has fillers added to it, which sometimes contains gluten. | somebody (208) | ||
| 461734 | 2006-06-09 00:26:00 | Putting 'gluten free' on bacon is a bit OTT, however I'm one of those lucky people who are allergic to gluten (wheat) and you'd be amazed at what they stick wheat in. Sausages are bad... only Hellers that I know of make a few gluten free ones. Potato chips are almost all a no-go... don't ask me why they feel the need to put wheat in potatos! I was watching one of those 'brand power' infomercial ads on the box last night for muesli bars (which I can't eat anyway). 98% fat free low salt Low cholesterol... No mention that half the thing is sugar  |

| 461735 | 2006-06-09 00:34:00 | I checked the small print in case they put breadcrumbs or some such in it. Nope. Pig (yes 88%), preservative, etc. Nothing containing flour or flour derivatives. Its just trendy labelling, meaningful doesn't come into it. And low cholesterol is another - you don't EAT cholesterol, its a substance the body manufactures, 2 types of it actually. So of course it doesn't contain any. Certain things you eat may affect how much and what type of cholesterol your body produces (and thats another debate) but you don't get it from eating it. So with my bacon sandwich I just ate, I didn't eat any gluten or cholesterol with it. No kidding. Did get sugar as it apparently contains a small amount of honey.... BTW regardless of water content, grill it on a piece of tinfoil and you get perfect crispy bacon, not the soggy stuff frying produces. |

Your bacon contained 88% pig. The other 12% was what? Preservatives come to mind immediately like sugar or honey. I would be more worried about MSG for example. You are not dead yet, otherwise you can't post here, so why worry. |
