2006-06-08 10:06:00 | just reading the rural newspaper at the moment. a couple of interesting articles. (jim anderton) If we had evidence that we would be at risk, i would not let it happen thats kinda a backward way to look at it. anyone with brains would be saying "we won't let it in unless there is evidence that its 100% safe". the catch 22 of all this is there is no evidence to say its safe. at best its if honey is heat treated the chances of EFB reaching NZ are reduced by a million times but it still dosn't say WHAT the risk is. it could well be that instead of being infected in one year, we get infected in 20 years. we don't want to be infected EVER ! ! ! afaik there hasn't been ANY testing to find out what the ACTUAL risk is (as opposed to what they THINK the risk is). anderson says the australian blockade of NZ apples is a political decision so basically aussie wants to import possibly infected honey over here which will up the price of the apples so they are less competitive should aussie let them in. the other interesting thing is afaik we cannot export our honey to western ausie, the same state that wants to send honey here. what are they worried about, they have more diseases than we do. shouldn't we be exporting to them first ? at the end of the day its nothing more than a political footy match with our horticulture on the gambling table. those in the fruit/vege industries that rely on bees you may be in for tough times :( www.ruralnews.co.nz another article..... a damning independent report (relesaed by auditor-general) has slammed MAF for leaving the door wide open to a raft of potential biosicurity threats www.ruralnews.co.nz

2006-06-08 11:19:00 | How disappointing - but should we expect anything other than that from our Aussie neighboors? They are merely accusing us of the very thing they are trying to do to us, which is referred to as either an 'own goal' or a 'pre-emptive retaliation' depending on your viewpoint. Is this the fire blight issue all over again? There's a simple solution to this : if we only buy NZ honey then it won't be worth the Aussies trying to offload their honey here! So lets all buy Kiwi made! A

2006-06-08 11:35:00 | i would say that the poor tasting aussie honey will not sell well here anyway (got mates and cuz in aussie who won't touch the stuff). however the main market it most likly will be sold to is the cooking industry. there is always a company wanting to buy cheaper. will that result in cheaper products? i don't know. the other concern to is how do you know its aussie honey they are importing? there is always someone trying to do it cheaper, ie bypass the "heat treatment" or mix in cheaper chinese honey. like wise, how to you tell kiwi honey isn't watered down with aussie honey? can maf/customs actuall police it? don't forget something like 30% of food is bee related. at worse it could mean 30% of food will be dearer or simply not advailable. (a lot of orchards etc are barly making profit as it is).

2006-06-08 21:28:00 | Why the frack are we importing Ozzy honey when those pricks won't allow us to expert NZ apples to OZ??? | paulw (1826) | |
2006-06-09 09:14:00 | because the aussies are big and ugly enough to tell NZ to go shove it without fearing any international repercusions. | tweak'e (69) | |
2006-06-09 15:24:00 | Maybe that's the problem . . . youse guys should declare war on Australia, get UN funds and troops and fire a few volleys at their passing ships to show you're sincere about it all . Just get some . . . er . . . . mentally insuffucient person with a rifle into a rowboat somewhere in the channel betwixt you two and have it flying the NZ colors . Tow him out there and take away his oars . . . bring the guy some sandwiches and a few Fosters from time to time and tell him it's for the good of the bees . He'll understand . You may want to also issue him some ammunition in case the Australian navy decides to retaliate .
