461398 2006-06-07 10:58:00 I taught myself HTML a long time ago, and I learnt CSS, PHP, ASP & JSP at SIT (thats a lot of TLAs), but I never learnt how to actually design a website & what content should go where (if it should be included at all).

I'm creating a website for the company that I do a bit of office junior type of work for. I figure it is a good way to get up to speed.

Since I'm not a very artistic person, I'll use a template. I like the look of Nautica2.2 Liquid - tell me if you think it would be appropriate once you have read the description of the business.

It is primarily a business management & advice company, but it also includes accounting services, and business & office solutions (The Toshiba photocopier dealership).

I will start working on a test site at greven.servegame.com - I'll get some more information on the 3 businesses tomorrow & replace mejobloggs' spiel with a blurb about each of the businesses. The mountain banner looks really good, so I might leave it in there even though it doesn't relate at all to any of the businesses.

One final thought: how do I enable syntax highlighting in vi? Gedit probably wouldn't work too well over the net since I only have 128k upload.

461399 2006-06-07 11:12:00 hey Greven- from an 'artistic' point of view it doesn't look too bad at all, nice and clean layout, easy to read, loads and looks good in F/fox. Can't help you with the syntax highlighting sorry :stare: Shortcircuit (1666)
461400 2006-06-07 11:27:00 The main page took a few seconds to load from scratch in FFox.
Seems like something is making it take a few seconds to load. (ADSL)
Imaging what 56k is like...

But meh, it might be just me.

Thats because I used a template  the best looking free template I could find. Do you think it is a good idea to use the same template for all the sub-pages (contact, products, staff etc) or should I make them slightly different?

I'm probably going to have to learn how to use gimp to do what I'm thinking of - make the tab image a bit bigger so the big tabs aren't missing a bit of the background, and convert the blue to red for the Toshiba pages. It would also be good to make the active tab stick out instead of looking the same as the inactive tabs.

461402 2006-06-07 12:36:00 WOW!! a vi user :D . I dont know any, but there must be a few editors that will highlight the code for you.

Yes, use the same template for all pages.

Looks great.

461403 2006-06-07 13:39:00 I will start working on a test site at greven.servegame.com Interesting... the banner image for the template is the same view as a photo my missus took last year when visiting Yosemite National Park in the US - she's using it for her desktop (www.imagef1.net.nz). You're not an emacs user are you? :D

vi is a great tool for when I have to ssh in & change something. When I'm at the physical box, I use a graphical editor.

461406 2006-06-07 21:40:00 Just one minor detail

Any idea where that mountain is? I personally would make the picture region-specific (i.e throw a pic of the Hokonui Hills at sunset or something in there) rather than some pic that none of the local visitors will be able to identift with

Just my :2cents: (not too sure if its a good idea though)

461407 2006-06-07 22:37:00 Yosemite National Park or whatever you call it.

And Greven... I assume you used the old version of the template, and then updated it? Cause you are missing an updated image.

Compare your top right shadow to the one here: www.icebytes.co.nz

IIRC you need to update bg02-blue-right.png.

Oh, and your top menu tabs are breaking. I never thought anyone would use such long words in them. I guess I will have to fix that as well.
