462490 2006-06-12 23:28:00 I was in the middle of posting when it disappeared. Friends in Auckland emailed to say there were huge winds and downtown Auckland had lost power, so goodbye servers....It wasn't all of Auckland, apparently West Auckland was fairly ok apart from windy.

My friend in Ngapara (30km west of Oamaru) had actual real thick snow. And power cuts. She's never had proper snow.
Here in Wyndham it was cool in the morning, then the sun came out got up to 9 degrees then clouded over again and its now raining. But not even a frost. And no winds. No sleet for that matter either which was the forecast....but then I've noticed they seem to be consistently wrong with our forecasts.

Would Auckland data centers not have UPS' and Generator Backups?
Kinda worrying if they didnt...

462491 2006-06-12 23:32:00 Got locked in my building too... The security doors defaulted to 'locked' once the backup power ran out, seems pretty dangerous to me :S

Yea sucks when that happens...
Heard a few stories about people being locked in a basement while working on main supplies to the building when backup power for security systems runs out...

462492 2006-06-12 23:35:00 Yeah - The Mount Eden Nuclear Plant has a nice ring to it.

So does Nuke power on Queens :p

Only bad side to Nuclear power is that it is best to run it at 100% and cant quickly shutdown if supplies from it are interupted like a sub station going down...

462493 2006-06-12 23:45:00 I think it was more because while the south was without power and still are in many places, no one made a fuss.
Yeah, sheep don't use the Internet much or get into mainstream media reports an awful lot. :D

yep, they do, but PressF1 is NOT hosted in a data centre, its hosted in IDG's Office.

462495 2006-06-13 02:56:00 I am just really grateful that we did not lose our power yesterday like what happened during the "Big Snow" of 1992 . At 8am it was 0 deg and never went higher than 2 deg . That is the temperature up on Mt Hutt skifield on a nice day, by the way - very cold .

Our garden and lawn looked like a northern hemisphere Christmas postcard yesterday, although the amount of snow was less than what we have had in the past . Fortunately the sun has been making a few appearances today which has warmed things up to a balmy 6 deg right now .

My brother down in Ashburton had so much snow he couldn't get any of his 4WD vehicles down the driveway and had no power all day . Fortunately he has a generator and wood burner so they had warmth and light . He spent half the day skiing around his property behind his tractor . :p

462496 2006-06-13 08:28:00 Aucklanders need to stop whinging and get on with life and stop worrying about their little wee power outage,What about the south island where the snow is half a metre deep in some places and some areas are still without power for the second night in a row and you moaning whinging aucklanders moan about four wee hours BIG DEAL.down here they use good old kiwi know how and use bar bqs fires or whatever else to keep warm and cook meals which just goes to show this is where the real men are and you dorklanders worry about four hours without heat harden up jafas and get over it. Look it's not our fault the idiotic councils are banning fireplaces / pot belly stoves. And besides, having no electricity means everyone usually gets together for dinner. Something thats rather lacking at my house

462498 2006-06-13 10:17:00 Where are the whinging Aucklanders HiTech? None in this thread. It's interesting to hear what happened to posters up and down the country, but people relating their experiences is in no way whinging. This concept of 'Jafa' and 'Jafaland' exists purely in some posters heads. Build a bridge and get over it mate. Regional arguments add nothing other than confirm to the rest of the world what a petty two-bit country this is. One or two others called this right earlier - it was a media beat up on a slow news day. Any arguments about not wanting to watch Auckland on the news is a double edged sword. Remember that.
