If you have upgraded the software sometimes it doesn't include the spell checker Directory have a read of This forum (www.mydigitallife.info) - that article is for FF, but it may relate to Thunderbird as well, try installing a Directory and see what happens. OR have a look at This page (kb.mozillazine.org) - theres a link on th etop line that is saying it fixes Thunderbird - just clicked it and there's instruction on how to fix it.
