463803 2006-06-17 03:53:00 Hi

Seeing as I am the go-to person amongst my friends they have started asking me more and more to do work for them on their PC's and even get them new systems.

Whilst in the past I did minor work for no charge I am finding now that they are quite often wanting more time intensive work doing and I am not going to start doing that for free!!!!

The other day I did some work for a friend after getting them a replacement desktop. This involved:

1) Powering their old system and finding a hard drive they couldn't access.
2) Backing up all documents, pictures and music.
3) Backing up favourites, e-mail messages and address book.
4) Removing the hard drives from the old PC.
5) Installing the old hard drives into the new PC.
6) Reformatting and installing Windows XP.
7) Installing all programs + antivirus, adware/spyware programs and firewall.
8) Importing favourites, e-mail messages and address book.
9) Installing all external hardware including multifunction centre and digital video camera.
10) Setting up the internet connection and accessing the net.
11) Preconfiguring the firewall for their common used programs.
12) Activating Windows XP.

I told her before I started that there would be a charge for this and I was thinking of charging her $100 for my time. Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks in advance.

463804 2006-06-17 04:08:00 If time >= 2hrs then
begin
rate_charged := 100;
end

Well if she offers you other favours *wink wink nudge nudge* ...

If you took say two to three ours to do all that, don't see why not. If you had to take some time away from other important things, charge what you feel is nesscary.

463805 2006-06-17 04:11:00 $50 per hour. pctek (84)
463806 2006-06-17 04:14:00 However, as soon as you start charging, you have income ... and there are many cans of worms involved with that. The Infernal Revenue Department might take an interest. Graham L (2)
463807 2006-06-17 04:28:00 I do not believe in charging mates for anything, unless its going to put me out of pocket. What comes around goes around. Thats just how things are done with my mates/family.

She's not my type :)

$50 per hour.

I didn't really want to charge her the going rate as I still wanted it to be a good deal for her

Yeah...Bloody IRD!!!

Me to...to an extent. I don't mind doing the smaller jobs for nix but I gues sit is either say No or charge a wee bit so that it is an attractive deal for both of us.

Anyway, thanks for all your input. It took me between three and four hours to do all of that.

463809 2006-06-17 06:20:00 Charge her $50, she'll be happy and you won't be ripped off. george12 (7)
463810 2006-06-17 08:01:00 I see nothing wrong with $100 bucks for your time and expertise in doing a clean and working rebuild.

People make a living out of that sort of thing with the $50/hr but if its a mate, then mates rates come into it. :)

If you don't start charging you will have to start saying no as it will chew into your time. Even if they offer to do something for you that will help, payment is always appreciated.

Especially since you are now the official support/repair person for that job. You will be needed in the near future!!!

463811 2006-06-17 10:51:00 I would charge $100 for good friends.
$200 for normal punters.
$50 for "special" friends :-)
