| 463776 | 2006-06-17 00:37:00 | Does anyone have any thoughts as to what is the best option for using a NZ vodafone cellphone in Aussie. I've had a little look online and it seems that you can get an Aussie RED sim card for 9.95 then top up with prepay cards over there. Or is it better to take your nz sim card and have to pay when you get calls from NZ. (Forwarding charge). Theres so many options that I'm just totally confused. Hell I could even try an Optus or Telstra sim card...do they have them...? Then again...would I want to know my house has burnt down if i'm on holiday in Melborne....lol. Andy :dogeye: |

Not difficult, needs a credit card so calls can be direct billed, as the prepay side is NZ only . If on NZ contract then its automatic, provided that "roaming" has been anabled by Vodafone . Its quite seamless as long as you have taken care of the above . As soon as you turn it on over there you get auto text messages telling you what to do . |

You don't have to make arrangements before you go over . With your prepay sim card from vodafone, it's automatic roamin too, you switch it on in aus, and it works 100%! No need to setup or anything, so godfather is wrong in that regard . All you need to make sure, is that you get enough credit in your mobile . That can be maintained by: #1: Topping up a whole lot before you go over #2: Using a credit card calling 777 (the customer service line fr ur mobile, free even if you're in aus) #3: Asking your mates to top up for you in NZ #4: Topping up via credit card online . Calls are the same as in NZ, so if you're on motormouth, while in Aus, calling NZ and Aus would cost exactly the same, $0 . 49/min . Receiving is charged too though, at the same rate, per minute . Txt are about 44c each . So personally, if I'm going over for a holiday, I'll just stick with prepay auto-roam . Prepays that you buy locally in Aus are quite expensive actually, the base rates are about 30cents/half min, and often there's a 15c flagfall . Even more expensive than NZ prepays sometimes . . . And just call while in Aus using NZ vodafone prepay, don't txt, since it's almost the same amt anyway . More on . vodafone . co . nz/services/07 . a . 15 . 1_get_set_up_prepay . jsp?item=prepay" target="_blank">www . vodafone . co . nz |

| 463781 | 2006-06-17 07:40:00 | Nope, no pre-arrangements is required whatsoever. Just turn your phone on as soon as you land. Then you'll get a txt or two from Vodafone saying welcome to auz or something.... you are now roaming, etc. these are the features u can spend ur mney on in auz, etc. All calls, etc. will be same rate as if you were in NZ. | techie (7177) | ||

When my parents recently went to Oz they had to take their cellphone into a Vodaphone shop for a quick fix before it would work over there . Not sure of the exact details but it didn't cost them anything and they could then text me just like they do here, for the same price . Other people I know didn't have to do that though, so I guess it depends on your phone and how old it is, maybe? |

| 463785 | 2006-06-19 00:04:00 | I have Vodaphone 300 mins evenings and weekends . Not had a problem in Aussie but be aware that your vodaphone cellphone will seek out the best signal and use that service whether it be Optus, Telstra or Vodaphone . You can however over-ride that for each individual call therefore even if Optus has the best signal you can specify to use Vodaphone on that occasion . If you are in an area where Vodaphone is not available then you chose to either not make the call or use the other service for that particular call . It is more straightforward than it sounds !!! :D Misty ( the real Misty - not the imposter "Mistya" :groan: ) |
