2006-06-16 07:48:00 | I've got a real cheapie DSE branded model about a year or so ago, which works fine. Main complaint is the lousy remote control interface and setup originally was a pain. I'll know what to look out for next time and will likely choose a mainstream brand. | Greg (193) | |
2006-06-16 08:00:00 | I think in general most DVD sets are good, people often mistake cheap for no good, I had a DSE one for $60 and lasted 2 years before I spilt beer on it. Now I have 2 warehouse ones that for $70 and have had no probs. I think just as long as you get a multizone one and take care of it they last pretty well. | rob_on_guitar (4196) | |
2006-06-16 08:57:00 | I had an el-cheapo one that I bought from the supermarket for under $100. Worked great except some discs 'rubbed' when they started up and the remote was awful. Now have a Philips expensive DVD which I hate, slow to start up, slow to do anything, infuriating menu system and the symbols on the tiny silver remote buttons are grey (duh)... impossible to read without a magnifying glass. Bring on the day when these companies realise that user-friendly means the user can use it. I'd say buy a $70 player from the W/house... 12 month guarantee I guess and if it claps out in a year buy another one. With second hand you don't know what little problems it has (always assume that it HAS a problem- that's why they're getting rid of it!) and of course no warranty!

2006-06-16 10:34:00 | Get one of the $60 Countdown ones that can play mp3 disks as well, you can have music all day off one CD. We got one for a child we know, the last one on a special offer, a metal finish scarlet one that no one else wanted because of the colour, wish now that I had given it to myself! Very nice unit with remote and quite a lot of sophisticated features. A real bargain. | zqwerty (97) | |
2006-06-16 22:43:00 | Farmers sells Hyundai DVD players, with a 3 year guarantee. If you have a problem they will most likely give you a new unit rather than repair the old one. Have bought two of these as gifts - they work great and are priced well. | Strommer (42) | |
2006-06-17 02:24:00 | My grandparents have a Sony DVD player that is crap. it only plays DVDs and music CDs. It won't play SVCDs or mp3s or even show a slideshow when you put in a CD full of jpegs. Opa has a digital camera, so I'm thinking of getting all the grandkids to pitch in & get him one of those cheap DVD players that can show a slideshow of your photos, and can read off SD cards.
