462847 2006-06-13 21:35:00 I see the pricks are adding a CC surcharge. Not as bad as some gas stations in Oz are doing. Adding A$2.35 per fill if you use a CC.. Wonder how long before this catches on here..?? paulw (1826)

Usually we see this dual-pricing tableau as the difference in Self-Serve v Full-Serve .

If you pump it yourself, you get a discount (hahahahahahah!), but if you let the school drop-out do it, they jack you up pretty bad .

In the old days (I ain't going there again!), gas was $0 . 249US/gallon, and you got your oil and coolant checked, tire pressures inspected or corrected as necessary, windshield washed . . . not just squigee'd!, and free glasses or transistor radio(s) for minimum purchases, and . . get this part . . . . FREE trading stamps, useable for reimbursement for gifts in a catalog . We had S&H Green Stamps, or BlueChip Stamps given away to you at 1 per ten cents value of purchase price .

There was one line of gas stations in LA (Terrible Herbst or Park's Texaco, I cannot remember which it was!) that gave away a free Cadillac if your pump stopped on the same numbers across the dial when it ran in the automatic fill mode . If the dial read $9 . 99, you had three-9's and you'd win . They gave away one free Cadilac a week that way, and the customers would line up before midnight of the new week and try to fill up with a set of matching numbers .

Even during the "gas wars" where we had gas stations in a urinating contest to kill the competition, prices could get down to $0 . 09US/gallon . That's nine cents a gallon, and you still got the free glasses or dishes and the trading stamps!

It wasn't unseen to have attendants standing at the corners of the stations where the price boards were posted, waiting and watching if the gas station on the other corners lowered their prices . They'd then jump up and drop their price just enough to be a little cheaper .

462849 2006-06-14 02:01:00 So that's why gas-guzzling vehicles are so popular in the US - what a waste of fuel. somebody (208)
462850 2006-06-14 05:07:00 Of course they've still got their small economy size gallon; only 4/5 the size of ours. ;) Graham L (2)
