| 463861 | 2006-06-17 22:40:00 | Drive reliability by brand isn't constant in all countries, the variable is the handling by different distributors. Ah, I see, all those Maxtors, Fujitsus and Samsungs are sold by dodgy distributors in NZ who throw them around. Whereas Seagates are sold by NZ distributors who handle them carefully. And heres me thinking Seagates have a 5 year warranty for some other reason, like reliability. But no, its the distributors, Seagate knows NZ distributors are careful so offer 5 years. |

You just called TP, Dove and Ingram dodgy, whom do or have done Maxtor, Fujitsu and Samsung. Your comments are EXTREME stereotyping and a bit odd at best!. Anyway back on topic, I wouldn't touch maxtor with a bargepole. They have improved over the years but there failure rate is still horrid compared to seagate and thats being very genorouse.. |

| 463864 | 2006-06-18 03:45:00 | Whereas Seagates are sold by NZ distributors they can be parrallal imported just like every other brand is. its hard to know which retailers is selling parrall imported products or NZ sourced products. it shouldn't matter as seagate still do the warranty. HOWEVER the HD trade is a bit werid. i don't know if they are still doing the OEM setup. ie they sell OEM drives BUT they are not warrantied by the manafacture, the warranty is done by the (unkown) OEM company. the manafactures have been known to refuse to repair/replace drives beacuse they are OEM. |

| 463865 | 2006-06-18 04:28:00 | My Maxtor hard drive failed after 2.5 years. :( I have a 200gb Seagate as my external hard drive, its pretty good. I brought it because it has a 5 year warrenty and that the Seagate brand was pretty good. |

But no, its the distributors, Seagate knows NZ distributors are careful so offer 5 years. Seagate's warranty probably has more top do with marketing than engineering. From memory they did a massive flip-flop from 3 to 1 to 5 years warranty in a short space of time. Any discussion on reliability on Net forums usually produces winners and losers that depend more on Country rather than brand. So called "Industry Insiders" say that the differences between brands as far as the factories are concerned are slight . Failure rates above 1 or 2% would be financial disaster for a drive manufacturer. Yet some people still talk about seeing multiple failures. Personally I've been sent Seagates and Samsungs well packed, Maxtors not so well packed and WD, aren't they the ones that DSE sell in plastic bags. |

| 463867 | 2006-06-18 06:48:00 | That and Western Digital. Right Jen?I haven't had any problems with a Western Digital. Lost 3 Seagate Barrcuda's and most recently a Maxtor. The Seagates were all from the same shop and lasted from 20 mins to 6 weeks. I decided to take a Maxtor next time as my replacement drive  | Jen (38) | ||
| 463868 | 2006-06-18 06:52:00 | Hello checkout girl, I have a fault with my HDD, what can I do? If my experience with supermarket product returns is anything to go by, you will get an instant replacement or a full refund, on the spot, no argument. Compare that to Supercheap PC or even some of the better names and you would be streets ahead to buy from your local supermarket. Cheers Billy 8-{) |
