701487 2008-08-31 01:28:00 Hey all,

So the church I attend has been getting into IT a little more.
We record the sermons and post them online, however the recording levels that go *in* to the PC differ, depending on the sound-tech of the week...

Ive been using Goldwave to do the recording, but I want an application that'll automatically adjust the input volume level in order to get it in a good "middle" ground. Otherwise, sometimes we have it down around 20%, other times we have the volume control around 70%.
Is there any application that does this at record-time as opposed to post-processing?

Lastly, we've got a couple of digital cameras / webcams to record certain events like Fathers Day services. Have been using VirtualDub to do the recording to XviD.
Is there anything else similar thats slightly easier to use in terms of having a great big "Record" button, so that I can teach others how to do it and not have to worry about managing it myself every week?

Any comments / suggestions would be appreciated

Cheers

Chill.

A note on the sound desk??? A bit of tape either side of the volume slider? :D

That would be the best way I think, but there may be others.

Our church is still in the dark ages (well kinda...) - they have only just got a data projector and PC... the sound desk is on it's last legs (20 years old)...

But the children's church (I run the sound desk/laptop etc there) has had one for about 5 years... church finances lol

701489 2008-08-31 07:27:00 Yeah that was one thought, but also as different people get up to do a Notice or something, the levels fluctuate...

And yeah, our church was same until I showed up... The projector PC, wireless gear and lots else is just stuff I've donated :p

701490 2008-08-31 07:36:00 I've never used it but remember it being recommended in a podcast I follow (itc.conversationsnetwork.org), an app called The Levelator (www.conversationsnetwork.org). Free and multi-platorm so worth a shot. sal (67)
701491 2008-08-31 08:07:00 How are you feeding the sound into your PC ?
are you using an Aux send from the pastors channel
or are you using the record out RCA on the board.
If I was you I would use an Aux send set to pre
so your guys can set the level with that and not the slider
Get them to check the levels at the beginning of the sermon.

701492 2008-08-31 13:03:00 Thing is that he gets excited, so volume varies with the excitement also... :D

Levelator looks good, but only appears to do post-recording... ?

701493 2008-08-31 15:39:00 Depending how many channels, your audio source and if the signal passes through other devices before it hits the pc will determine what sound gear to use.
If its just mics then I have found this to be a handy tool, although the initial set up may seem hard at first but it really is very simple. And free: http://www.wavosaur.com/

If the guys are riding the fader then you need a compressor on his channel
and aux send to PC.

701495 2008-08-31 21:41:00 Goldwave has a expander/compressor built in to it. Just set it up right, and it:) should keep a constant level. Peter H (220)
