463578 2006-06-16 10:17:00 By Gawd, you're right James! At first I thought surely it must be a hoax.

Love this quote:
"When you're as rich as Bill Gates, giving away money is a full-time job."

And more from this site: (www.sfgate.com)

In recent years, the infamously hard-charging software titan who made himself the world's richest man by transforming the way people use computers has morphed into the world's most influential philanthropist. He and his wife, Melinda, are credited with making a major difference in the quests to defeat hunger and major illnesses, from HIV to malaria, that plague some of the world's poorest countries.

But it is a precarious time to leave the company he built. The Redmond, Wash., company is facing a new era of competition marked by the rise of Internet players led by Google, now seen as its toughest competitor.

463579 2006-06-16 12:42:00 Love Bill Gates or hate him.

I do believe though, that if it was not for the likes of him and his ilk, we would not be able to even have a computer.

In this I would include Steve Jobs and also Linus Torvalds.
I would include heaps of people from Intel and AMD as well but I don't know all their names.

Thanks to the innovators!

Oh please. There were O/Ss before Bill Gates. There were GUI O/Ss before Bill Gates. There were PCs before Bill Gates. There was the internet and browsers before Bill Gates. There were Office Apps before Bill Gates.
The only difference if Bill Gates had never existed is that someone else would have been Mr Stinking Rich.
Mr Gates may be the marketing king of the world but he sure didn't invent any of it.

I think what sweep was trying to say is that it was the likes of bill gates and steve jobs that put the computer into homes for the average person and not the hobbyist. I would say that steve and steve from apple could take the most credit for that with bill gates.
They made it accessable for the masses

463583 2006-06-17 02:32:00 Thanks to the innovators!
Bill gates & Steve Jobs weren't true innovators - they were brilliant businessmen who had access to the true innovators (who probably wouldn't have got anywhere with their brillant inventions without the great businessmen)

If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs, it would be Buddhism.
