Lest there be any doubt about the speed at which computing is moving off the desktop and onto the server farm, consider the dimensions of "Project 02," the new data center Google is quietly constructing near the Columbia River on the Oregon-Washington border . "As big as two football fields, with twin cooling plants protruding four stories into the sky," says The New York Times, which pegs Google as an easy leader in the global data-center race . Easy to see why, when the Googleplex, as it's called, hosts an estimated 450,000 servers in 25 centers worldwide (little wonder it's been buying up dark fiber like Twizzlers; but if you really want to call it "SergeyCom," go ahead . ")) . "Google is like the Borg," Milo Medin, a computer networking expert who was a founder of the 1990's online service @Home, told The Times . "I know of no other carrier or enterprise that distributes applications on top of its computing resource as effectively as Google . " Before we leave this, one last note on that server metric: If it's true that Google does run about 450,000 servers and there are an estimated 900 million computer users in the world, then each machine supports some 2,000 users . As Chris Gulker notes, 2,000 users is no big deal for a Web server - unless they're all using server-based applications . "So one wonders how scalable Google's applications, Google Spreadsheets, Writely et al . might be as more customers flock to them," Gulker writes, "especially since Google will want to keep its search engine and attached ad-serving processes humming along at top speed as well .
