702097 2008-09-02 22:17:00 Morning all. I have a friend who asked what laptop to buy? Did a search here and couldn't find any recent threads.

She and her husband run a business so they'll want to be able to connect to the business computer remotely, from home.

Unlikely to be gaming. Run MYOB, Office, bit of surfing, probably Skype once they try it, digital photos. Nothing high end.

She will want as cheap as possible but thats not too clever IMHO - quality and longevity are better.

Whaddya reckon?

702098 2008-09-02 22:23:00 Toshiba, HP or ASUS....even Lenovo do a decent laptop..... SolMiester (139)
702099 2008-09-02 22:27:00 The only half decent Lenovos are the uber high end ones, and they are over priced IMO. The cheaper ones seem to run like crap for some reason, seen it a bunch of times. And the bloatware that comes with them is amazing.

I'd look at the entry level Toshiba Dual Core L300 Business laptop, very nice laptop, add 2GB of RAM to it as well, whole lot should come to under $1300ish. We've sold heaps, I own one (previous model) and I'm extremely happy with them. They also normally come with Vista Business, and have downgrade disks for XP Pro! :) (At least you can look for one with that option, if you don't want Vista)

I'd say HP would be the bottom of the three Sol recommended, their chassis design is not that great, they aren't a very sturdy laptop.

Asus or Toshiba.

Toshiba also had a cash back offer on in July and August, I don't know if that's extending into September though.

702100 2008-09-02 22:53:00 ASUS.
Toshiba second, most only have a 1 yr warranty, ASUS is 2.

702101 2008-09-02 23:01:00 Cool. I must say ASUS came to mind as first choice. Personally I prefer XP Pro but Vista with 2GB Ram is becoming the standard option and I don't want to complicate the advice. I'll just mention XP as possible. Winston001 (3612)

Cheaper then that (up here in Auckland at least). Heres an example (www.pbtech.co.nz) seen a few stores with similar prices.
