464763 2006-06-20 07:53:00 what a load of bollocks.

its nothing more than a dirty reinstall. the only really good thing is it removes the old files before replacing them.

2 things that article didn't tell you.........

you really do need to use a disk with the correct service pack ie if your runnin XPsp2 then you need a XPsp2 disk not a XPsp1 disk. useing eg XPsp1 disk can break your install and cause more damage. however if the fault is because of an sp2 update repairing with sp1 disk can fix it.

even if you do the reapir its no gauantee that it fixes your problem as other software has other bits and pieces still installed and in use. also its not uncomman for the repair to break other software.

If you linking to articles from Fred Langa (The Langa List) you really should attribute the link. I know his name is all over the article, but it is nice to acknowledge the source when the link is posted. It might even attract a few more views.

I see your point tweak'e, but software repairs don't come with guarantees, and anything that could help is worth sharing. I have just used the repair function for Outlook 2000 (locking up on download of mail) and had to run it three times before the fix was complete and effective. The previous time that I repaired Outlook it took only two attempts. I had the wib-wobs the first time, not knowing if I could repair it at all, but with that experience under my belt I was quite relaxed about the triple run and probably wouldn't have given up until after 5 or so attempts.

The article will definitely help the less experienced user to attempt an XP repair with confidence.

Cheers

464767 2006-06-20 10:38:00 I'm not sure that I would call it a load of bollocks as that method has worked for me several times when Windows fell over . A reformat is not always possible in certain circumstances so that information could be useful to quite a few people .

A repair is not fail-proof however, as one PC I tried performing it on really spat the dummy less than a quarter of the way through and the only way to rescue it was a complete reformat and reinstall .

The lesson I learnt from that was to always backup data before performing any kind of surgery on Windows . Luckily for me I usually do .

i just wish they would explain the dangers as well. its better to actually fix the problem than to use a quick fix.

EDIT: sorry my bad. the article is bollocks not the repair process. i've got a mates pc on the bench at the mo which suffered from a "sytem restore" repair :(
