464364 2006-06-19 05:48:00 Ive a Wx Stn, displaying amongst other things, inside & outside humidty. Ive noticed that the inside is always 20% in value less than the outside reading, despite the fact that the inside unit is less than 3M away and windsows in the room are always partially open. As well the house has numerous downlights that allows free flow of air (and heat escape).

Ive no way to determine if the figures are correct, but is it normal for internal humidity to be less than external measurements?

Thanks

John in Mosgiel.

464366 2006-06-19 06:34:00 Humidity readings are actually Relative Humidity.

That is, they indicate the amount of moisture in the atmosphere relative to the maximim that can exist in vapour form for the ambient temperature, expressed as a %'age.

Given that the amount of moisture in the air (as in grams of water per cubic meter of air) inside the house is the same as that of the outside and given that the temperature inside is greater than the outside (which it usually is) then the Relative Humidity will be less in the warmer temperature because warm air can hold more moisture than colder air.

I was going to say swap the sensors over and see what happens, same result of course, Cheers :D
