| 465783 | 2006-06-28 20:10:00 | Then are you eating too much potatoes? Potatoes contains lots of starch that can turn into fats. That's why. If you eat boiled broccoli, carrots, and etc. You won't get that fat.Boiled Broccoli? Boiled? No thanks! If i'm going to take the time to grow good broccoli, i'm not going to remove all the vitamins before i consume it. Anyway, the point is that a vege based diet does not automaticly make a person is skinnier than a cow based one. There are other factors besides that. |

| 465789 | 2006-06-29 21:43:00 | Thanks. But how can you reduce your meal??? I know potatoes can make you really fat.Well that's simple then... i never thought of that! :p We're talking about the habits of a lifetime here. Being born in 1962, the people who bought me up had lived through a time when food was hard to get. It shows in the greed and gluttony of their eating habits. The family meal was a tradition in fattening us all up that was controlled by my dominating adopted Grandmother, who controlled much of the family and made sure that we all had a proper amount of stuffing. This included a 3 course meal for Lunch, a "proper" breakfast were people ate ALL there food even if they were struggling to get it in, and of course the lunch consisted of what was probably a well cooked lump of cow and 3 "vege" although one vege was sure to be potato, and the other 2 were also cooked to the point that all nasty vitamins and any identifying taste were scared away were. The rules were clear. "if you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding" although i'd rather have turned the pudding down in most cases as well, as preparation for anything to be eaten seemed to involve boiling or baking everything until there was no taste or food value left. It was essential that we all ate as much as possible, be thankful for it, and do this ritual at least 3 times a day. Predictably the host was a right wobbly tub of lard, or as she would have seen it, "well fed". These traditions are not uncommon is the western world, indeed there are many parents who seem to think their primary responsibility is to shove as much food down their children's throats as they can. I may have changed my diet, but i still find myself eating for comfort. Bad habits i know, but not unlike the stupidity of people who smoke or other things that they know will degrade their health and wellbeing. Much of the western world eats not because we are hungry, but because we haven't eaten for more than half an hour. Consequently we have a rising amount of fat gits. Fast food contributes to this because of it being so easy to eat several times a day for no better reason than we can. |

| 465790 | 2006-06-29 23:12:00 | If you go into asian values. In my experience grandmothers would say extra weight the person has expresses wealth and to some it shows how well off are you that you are always never remote of a nutritional meal, you are well fed and can finance yourself. Or the saying that finish off all the rice before you can leave the table, and if you leave rice on the bowl you will get an unattractive other half. I think you don't get that but you get the idea that food is consumed and not to be wasted or that it can be used to signal status. I think for a vegetarian, its also lifestyle that pple have adopted from the yrs and yrs. Think of american tv, its that lifestyle, lack of excercise, nibbling on snack foods, which many of them do not have meat, think of biscuits, bakery, diary foods, chips, confectionery etc etc. Even if you are not hungry, grab a bag of chips or biscuits and watch the movie. When one cooks a vegetable IMO, its also the ingredients that can be added such as the diary foods which enhances the flavour. Even a restaurant has this, such as creme fraiche and such. Or that its v flavoursome if one adds butter when brocolli is cooked on the pan. Vegetable food is not just water and blanched nor is it just eaten raw, I mean try eating a raw cabbage which can be eatable but try to eat a raw taro or potato or cauliflower. On the meat side of things, did you know you can eat raw beef? Chop it up so its minced up then crack an egg onto it, perhaps make the beef so its shaped like a donut and the raw egg with its still attached yoke sits in the middle of it. You just take a fork and mix it up and eat. Supposed to be noticeable meal of Britain I think. It can also be meabolism. For some pple they can have takeaways like 3x a week and not get fat in appearance wise and they may still have a 32 inch or lesser waist and weight 65kg or less and look skinny. If they go to a doctor and doa bloodtest that would show the bigger picture. Or likewise if you ask them do a 2km run. |

| 465791 | 2006-06-30 03:13:00 | Re: NZ lamb The exporters take some of the best lamb in the world, freeze it and reduce it to second rate! You can't get the top quality lamb in the NZ market easily, because the producers earn more from exports. What a catch 22. When I lived in South Africa, shoppers only bought frozen NZ lamb because it was cheaper than fresh. What a revolting state of affairs. On-topic - Burger fuel . Burger Wisconsin seems to be closing down all over the place in Wellington. The Wisconsin burgers I had in Taupo were first rate, but in Wellington the outlets seemed to suffer from a lack of decent staff. |
