| 465753 | 2006-06-27 07:26:00 | Thanks SurferJoe for explaining what chittlins are . I've never understood that in American literature - and never dreamed it was tripe (one of the very few things I won't cook) . But I'm sad about your comments on steak & kidney pie . A good one is simply glorious . Maybe you've had a bad experience with a phoney . And as someone reared with mint sauce as an essential accompaniment to all mutton, I can't agree with your putdown of that . Mind you, it should ideally be home-made just before the meal - not oversweet green stuff from a bottle . I can't say for sure if the Steak & Kidney pie thing was real or not . . . it just didn't smell good enought to eat for me at that time . I am disobeying my mother's orders about trying something twice . . but there's a story that accompanies that odor and the negative effect it has on me . One Winter, while I was still in the US Navy and stationed in Long Beach, California, I was moonlighting as a carpet layer for a friend and his father . It being a holiday evening when we got paid, we also got a large bonus of about $500US each and free reservations to a very posh restaurant in Dana Point, California . The setting was coat and tie, and we arrived pretty much as we were when we left work . . torn jeans, white tee shirts and (in those days before athletic sports shoes) tennies . If you tip the barkeep enough, then you don't get thrown out for poor dress and we took advantage of that . . . . long story short, we got pretty blasted, and since Terry, my boss's son had a Plymouth Road Runner with the "Beep-Beep" horn like the cartoon, we got the job of driving a few of the staff home after hours . . . I was pretty sober by that time, but Terry was definately still sheeted . On down Pacific Coast highway to deliver a waitress, we were running about 100 miles per hour when Terry found he couldn't accelerate any faster . He told me that the car was running hot and losing power . I was sober enough to realize that he was still in second gear, and he thought he was in forth . I, being the sarcastic wise-butt (I've been this way for as long as I can remember) made the suggestion that the engine was getting vapor locked for fuel and he bought it, stopping on the side of the freeway . There was no way this was possible, as it was a very cold December night . . . . er . . . about 4 am the next morning . Opening the hood, we could see the exhaust manifolds glowing cherry red from the extreme high rpm for the last 10 miles or so, stuck in second gear . That just reinforced his thought that the engine was indeed overheated and needed to be cooled off quickly . We didn't have any water jugs in the trunk, and his statement was "Just pi%% on it", which we both did, over the fender . The urine hit the hot manifolds, turned into superheated steam and the gas cloud blasted up to our nostrils . I was the first to vomit on . . . . . yup . . . the engine, now covering it in vomit . . and even more aroma was generated . . . . Terry in turn vomited all over the fenders and continued on down the side of the car . and he fell next to me on the shoulder of the road, where we both exhumed the alcohol and maraschino cherries and olives we had ingested in the past 5 or 6 hours . I don't to this day like the smell of urine cooking . :groan: Mint jelly is another long story . . . . . . . |

(My grandmother's version:= . Chopped fresh mint leaves Malt vinegar Sugar Put in old enamel cup. Add boiling water. Give a good stir & put saucer on top. Use after 5-10 minutes - either from the enamel cup for family or transferred to dinky jug for entertaining guests.. All you have to do is get the proportions correct. |

| 465756 | 2006-06-27 08:27:00 | What is fast food? Isn't that just a meat pattie with some sauce a salad with a bread bun? That is hardly junk food if one cooks it properly. Likewise what is a battered fish or what is fried chicken. I bet most of these are sold at restaurants as well and not given the same criticism. Or is a rich dessert and a nicely cooked steak meal with a rich creamy sauce not a meal that can get fat? Then followed by cheese and coffee. |

I bet people misused it and making themselves fat and they tried to sue McDonalds for it. I think it was their own fault to get fat. If they want to be healthy eat fruits and vegetables and no meat. |

| 465758 | 2006-06-27 09:12:00 | Back to Burger Winconsin. I am not a burger fan but the best I have had is from there. In one idle moment whilst waiting for our burgers I asked what they sold the most of - they have venison, beef with blue cheese, chicken with this that and everything, steak and on and on. The answer I got that 80% of the burgers they sell is the chicken with avocado and camembert. So, there you go, all that variety and most people buy the same thing !!! It was a real eye-opener. Misty :illogical  :D |
