465734 2006-06-26 01:44:00 OK . . . another 2-cent oration:

Let's talk about English food .

Here in Hemet, California, there was a restaurant called "The Mucky Duck" which was supposed to be authentic Londonderry vittles . I might have indeed been authentic, as I had not eaten such fare before and had nothing for reference .

Knowing how much I love lamb, I ordered the lamb with vegetables plate and a Killian's Red Light . My date had something that I wouldn't order . . . a sort of meat loaf probably made of floor sweepings and snouts .

Anyway . . . The order arrived and it looked like nothing that should have been called lamb ever in it's lifetime . It appeared to be three slices of very thin bologna . . a sliced luncheon meat that we have here in the US . . . boiled for hours and hours untill any flavor or color or aroma was totally removed, and then doused in mint sauce . . green, no less .

The vegetables were still partly frozen and had freezer burn on them making them the highpoint of texture and consistancy on the plate .

I feel to this day that the stuff they served me had less taste then the package it was wrapped in, and I actually thought of asking for the wrapper instead . The waiter told me: "It's an AQUIRED TASTE" that I need for all the subtle nuances of flavor . Perhaps he meant the mint slop . . as that was the prevailing flavor/aroma/color on the platter .

It's no wonder that the English were some of the finest sailors and explorers in the world . . . they were trying to find some good food!

Willing I am to try some NZ cooking . . as it's rumored that youse guys do things YOUR WAY, and not as the queen dictates . I do not, however, think we have any "New Zealand-Style" restaurants here in the US .

PS: as I said in a post above this, I LOVE NZ lamb and beef . Please tell me you cook it the way I like it! You certainly have a good product, don't tell me you muck it up with tons of mint jelly!

I will trade a personal recipe for those of interest .

Yeah! NZ!

465737 2006-06-26 03:48:00 Got to put a word in for Mrs T's home-made Supergiganticmonsterburgers.

Lean beef patties, loads of lettuce, tomato & onion plus anything else you fancy and smother with lashings of home-made barbecue sauce. Two are enough for my son, who could eat your average beef beast at one sitting. All you have to do is knock off the horns, hooves and tail, give the beast a little time on the barbie, whack it between two buns, pour on a bucket of sauce and a sack of onions then cut through his restraints and stand well back.

We don't eat them often though, I can barely manage just one and it can take me weeks to recover!

Every time I see an ad for a McDonalds or BK wimpy burger it makes me want to go get a gun and put it out of its misery.

Cheers

465739 2006-06-26 04:49:00 I usually have Wendy's. I ask for a double cheese and no sauces.

Alternatively, a simple egg burger from the local takeaway is almost as good.

Good to hear Joe because lamb/mutton is a declining taste in the US of A . It has a particular smell when cooking which we don't notice because it is normal . But I've experienced rarified American nostrils atwitching with distaste at the smell of a lamb roast .

I don't have a recipe . I just chuck it in a covered roasting dish, add potatos, onions, pumpkin, carrots, some water to prevent the whole lot drying out - and pop it in the oven . Slow roast at 180C for maybe 3 hours .

465741 2006-06-26 05:34:00 The only hamburgers I like and eat are McFoxy's. Made a dozen of them for tea last Friday night expecting to have at least three left over for lunch the next day, but no such luck. :(

Don't know why but the tribe reckoned they were the best ones ever made so the whole lot were cleaned up in one sitting, the greedy lot.
