465062 2006-06-22 12:04:00 For very cheap and good (good as in good quality sound, etc.) international calls, I use Telecom's 0161. The 0161 service seems to be unknown to many people although I have been using for more than a year now and have found it to be the best - those cheap ChiTel, etc. calling cards you find at convenience mart are just hopeless - sometimes I can hear myself talking, i.e.lag when making a call.

Telecom's 0161 Calls start from just $0.08/min to the UK and USA, $0.04/min to Singapore, China and Malaysia. As you can see, the rates are highly competitive too, plus it's convenient! You just dial 0161 instead of 00 when making an international call from your home phone (Telecom landlines, not TelstraClear). :D

Hi bonkiebonks
Have you specifically tried ChiTel ? :horrified
I hear that some of the cards are not very good but Mrs Misty and I talked to the kids when they were on the big OE, one in London and the other two in Northern Ireland. We seldom had any trouble over a number of years, and were very satisfied. You have to get into the rhythm of dialling a lot of numbers but it soon becomes second nature ! :)

465064 2006-06-23 02:56:00 As for NZ broadband prices - now you'll really see some sparks fly! My opinion is that the costs are reasonable - I pay 70 bucks a month. But for many people that's over the top, especially leechers that demand unlimited bandwidth.

i wouldn't mind paying $70 in the service was reliable and worth it. instead everyone is piggybacked on top of each other and the system can't cope because telecon couldn't bother their ass to upgrade any of the technology or epuipment. And now they are paying for it because they were to stupid to think that the goverment wouldn't do anything to them so they thought they could get away with charging the most amount for the least amount of service. Now it's come back to bite them in the ass. I'm not even asking for unlimited even though I had it back in the UK and it was lovely. but 10 Gb a month is pathetic.

I know Greg and others will come back and say other things about how great it is, but simply it's not, pure and simple. The vast majority know it. telecon don't know the meaning of value for money and I don't think you do either, if you did you wouldn't be standing there with your fingers in your ears shouting "NOT LISTENING, NOT LISTENING".

Anyway Katherine if you can, go and download skype 2.5 (thats if you have enough in your datacap)
http://www.skype.com/
and buy skype credit. don't use skype free over the internet as I was having the same problem as you with it cutting out. Your credit will last a hell of a lot longer and it will be far cheaper for you.

465065 2006-06-23 22:58:00 Calling cards usually have high connection charge and bill per minute.

No connection fee with the Kia Ora card, and the last time I checked it was a bit cheaper than Telecom's 0161. We have used Kia Ora a lot for a year or two with no problems other than the occasional busy signal during peak times (have to simply redial to get through).

465066 2006-06-24 00:13:00 These calling cards get you to dial a local number (free), and then enter your account number etc. etc. They don't charge a connection fee unless you dial using a cellphone, or call their 0800 number. In my experience, they're quite good (and cheap).

I have also discovered something interesting the other day. VOIPBuster (www.voipbuster.com) has free PC-Landline calling using the internet, to countries including NZ, UK, + some other countries in Asia They are supposed to cap free calls at 1min, however I have had quite long conversations with people (lasting up to about 10 mins before I hung up), without being cut off. It's worth a try - though lag time was quite bad on my connection (Woosh).

465067 2006-06-24 01:36:00 And those calling cards are great for another purpose too, calling from your mobile!

Like the current Vodafone "Talk for 2hrs pay for 3mins" (about to expire soon tho), and Telecom's "3min Hour", I use them to call the landline access number as provided by the calling card, and then call overseas then! Great!

Which means, calling UK on weekday nights for me on Vodafone and using a Chi-Tel card, let's say an hour = $1.5 ($0.49x3) + $4.2 ($0.07x60) = $5.7

Heck, $6 for a whole hour's call from a mobile, haha, that's cheap!

465068 2006-06-24 04:29:00 :) Telecom 0161 for me - very cheap and very good quality - forget skype unless you want a iffy call. Peter H (220)
