2006-06-22 04:06:00 | lol graham :) orgnanic's is no problem. offical approved organic mite treatment came in last year but its not cheap and is a little tricky to use. don't forget you have to be running it organic for something like 4 years to become certified and you can't have any non organic farms withen something like 30km's of the hives. bumble bee, the hives i've seen are like a carboard box with holes in it. not sure of the insides. the bumble bees live in a different way, they are more of a mom, pop and 2.5 kids compared to mom and 100,000 kids. bumbles are more solidary rather than a hive and hibernate over winter, afaik...... i don't know a lot on bumbles. a bit on bumbles in nz (www.organicpathways.co.nz)

2006-06-22 04:19:00 | Nice one GL. "What did you do at work today, daddy", "Oh, I crawled around a paddock and fertilised 3598 flowers". "Oh, OK!" If that happened there would be lots more work for physiotherapists, ACC case managers, counsellors, orthopods, people making knee pads and brushes etc etc, not to mention sex therapists for the terminally confused flower fertilising operatives... Could be a whole new industry to support the people with the brushes. T'e - the organic apiarist on TV did acknowledge there was an organic solution, but he was underwhelmed by its efficacy. Still, that was just the usual TV1 junk journalism sound bite, so who knows what he said next. Yes, that is what I understood the bumble bee family structure to be like - sort of nuclear family style like on the Wheatbix packet. I have heard that mum gets fertilised one summer, then she hibernates over the winter and lays eggses in the spring using the sperm (are you allowed to say that here Jen?) from the previous summer. So I couldn't kind of imagine a humble bee hive, but what you say makes sense.

2006-06-22 04:25:00 | the organic apiarist on TV did acknowledge there was an organic solution, but he was underwhelmed by its efficacy i know it been used in euope for quite some time with good success. however the climate is somewhat different and i think it relies on evaperation for it to work so you have to watch temps and humidity. i know some people who are useing it and it took a lot of work to get it to work correctly.

2006-06-22 05:05:00 | Perhaps the apiarist was just indicating the extra costs and the learning curve for him and his staff in getting up to speed in using the organic solution? I guess that it is a complication he could well do without after all the hoops he has gone through to get organic certification... | John H (8) | |
| 465003 | 2006-06-22 05:12:00 | Yes .
