701953 2008-09-02 01:47:00 Does it make any difference to have 4 X 256 or 1 X 1G for speed or performance?

I have the option of 4 - sticks of 256 or 1 stick of 1Gig...what's the diff?

701954 2008-09-02 01:51:00 If you want dual channel, get the 4x256MB. If you want to expand later, however, go for the 1x1GB and then you can easily upgrade to more.

How many RAM slots do you have?
How old is your motherboard?

701955 2008-09-02 02:19:00 I'd go with the 1x1GB, definitely.

The less that's in your comp, the less there is to go wrong, I figure.

701956 2008-09-02 02:32:00 if its dual channel, you'll want at least 2. Id probably go for 2x512, so you dont waste slots on sticks of small capacity utopian201 (6245)

I agree in principal, but how much are you going to notice the interleaving? 1GB in one chip is just cleaner, and leaves room for expansion later.

701958 2008-09-02 03:42:00 It's just an older Athlon XP at 1.7, has 4 slots for RAM. SurferJoe46 (51)
701959 2008-09-02 04:02:00 You aren't gonna notice any difference whatever way you do it.

I'd get 1 x 1GB cause it's cheapest, tidiest and least likely to cause problems, then get another 1x 1GB and put it next door.

And you're sure 2 of the slots aren't SD RAM?

Hmmmm?

I thought all of them were SDRAM, might have a look at the MOBO instructions again and see what they are.

I dont think Athlon XP use dual channel ram. If that is the case, just get the largest your slots will allow. My motherboard (KT333) and most Athlon XPs only have 3 slots, supporting a max of 1gb each. You'll have to check your motherboard manual to be sure.

One notch - DDR RAM (www.hardwarezone.com.au).

Two notches - SDRAM (www.mtiusa.com).
