701877 2008-09-01 23:29:00 Hi,
My daughter has an Acer laptop just out of warranty. Where she plugs the power charger in, the little knob it connects too inside the computer has broken off. I have rung Acer and they say $550 to fix  and we will lose all info in the computer (not good for a yr 13 just coming up to exams).
They said we can try the local computer shop as they may be able to fix it more cheaply. They don't want to try but suggested an electronics engineer?
Has anyone had any experience or good putcomes from this problem.
Thanks so much :)

701878 2008-09-01 23:32:00 First - back up your data onto another machine. Do you have any battery power left on it?

Then try your local PC shop. If you prefer, you might be able to get him/her to back it up for you.

If it turns out it's too much $$ to fix, ditch the Acer and load the data back on to a new laptop - Asus are the best.

701880 2008-09-01 23:54:00 It's not covered by the CGA, as it's the user that's caused the damage. Been there, done that. ;) It's not really a laptop fault, all lappys are pretty much the same, you gotta be nice to the plugs.

Take the hard drive out before sending it to them, then they can't wipe your data. Either that, or take it to a PC shop, get them to clone your HDD to something else if Acer won't take the lappy without a HDD.

The whole motherboard has to be replaced on Acers, the power plug is not a separate part. $550 actually isn't too bad for that, be thankful you don't have a Sony!

Last time I replace a Sony motherboard it was going to come to about $1200 after labour, better to buy a new laptop!

701881 2008-09-01 23:58:00 A common problem, but often by the time it's fixed the heat from the poor connection can cook the motherboard beyond repair.

If the local computer shop can get the correct socket it's not difficult, if they can't then a good outcome is to have a short flexible cable soldered to where the socket was, with a female line socket on the end. Readily available parts and it won't give any more problems.

701883 2008-09-02 02:31:00 Hi There
Yes all correct, i had exactly the same problem with my son who suffers from autism on his Acer 3000 model laptop.
I pulled the beast apart and soldered myself and got another 12 months out of it but had to redo the job half a dozen times until it finally died from drowning.
I also never had anything to lose like important data, just couldn't afford to buy a new one at the time.

So it can be done

Good luck

701884 2008-09-02 02:44:00 Can't the power socket just be resoldered on? replacing the whole board sounds more like a money making scheme than a necessity Agent_24 (57)
701885 2008-09-02 02:55:00 Unless I read it wrong, it's the pin inside the power socket that broke off, not the whole socket? wratterus (105)
701886 2008-09-02 03:31:00 Then replace the whole socket Agent_24 (57)
