465465 2006-06-23 08:22:00 Sarah & I are thinking about buying a HDD DVD Recorder, and I was wondering (we haven't started looking yet) if any of them have network ports or any other way of connecting to a PC to download any recorded video off the HDD, or would I need to burn to DVD first and then transfer to the PC?

Is there anything else I should look for (pros or cons)?

Cheers,
Mike.

465466 2006-06-23 08:27:00 Some of the philips models do have a usb port in them but most have a firewire port in them as well but as yet i havent tried them but they do say firewire is much better for picture quality. Hitech (9024)

I had assumed that the firewire was in only (to record from Digital Video cameras), rather than out... but out might be good...

465468 2006-06-23 08:54:00 Normally it is just Firewire in. There are a few DVD recorders with ethernet ports, but only for streaming to another identical model at full quality or at low quality to a computer.

Is there anything else I should look for (pros or cons)? The only thing I would suggest is to consider whether you want it to work with Freeview next year. If so, you will need one with digital tuner which I doubt will be available locally until Freeview is in place.

My TV doesn't have a digital tuner, yet I understand that would work with Freeview, so why not a DVD recorder?

465470 2006-06-24 06:09:00 I think what he means is having a digital tuner in your DVD / HDD recorder would eliminate the need for a 'set top box' they are saying will be around $200. If a DVD / HDD recorder is less than $200 difference for a model with a digital tuner, then it would be worth it, otherwise not. pine-o-cleen (2955)
465471 2006-06-24 06:21:00 That's right. You can use an external tuner, like you can with an existing TV, but it won't be integrated, so you would either need to leave the set-top box on the station you want to record, or if you are going away for a few days and you want to record on multiple stations, you would need a set-top box with some sort of timer in it to switch stations or all your recordings will be on the one station. :) maccrazy (6741)
465472 2006-06-24 11:06:00 Seen any with digital tuners in them? I can't seem to find any. pine-o-cleen (2955)
465473 2006-06-24 23:49:00 They have them in the UK, but I don't think they can record analogue so I doubt they will be available here until next year.

Panasonic: www.panasonic.co.uk
Sony: www.sony.co.uk
Philips also has one with a digital terrestrial tuner and companies like Humax are selling Freeview capable DVRs.

One would assume that if our system is the same as that in the UK, then we will have similar models.

465474 2006-06-25 04:31:00 The Panasonic DMR-E500H has a network connection (10/100) on it so you can access it from you PC. Your PC will need XP and Window Media Player Ver 8.0 or later.

The person to ask is "Exwesty" as he has one networked. He could tell you how to download, etc form it.

But they are expensive, mine cost approx. $2000, and they only have a single layer DVD Writer.

There is a Sony unit with near enough to the same specs as the Panasonic, which has a dual layer writer. Don't know if it has a network connection but might be worth checking out (also about $2000).
