702547 2008-09-04 07:23:00 hey guys i tried to update AVG Free the other day (currently i have version 8.0.138) but it didnt wanna work and each time i've tried it since it still don't wanna work. it just comes up with a message in the system tray saying

'The connection with update server has failed. Please follow these steps:
- Make sure your Internet connection is active, please try to open the www.avg.com website
- Try to run the update later or schedule an automatic update for another time
- Make sure the connection parameters are set properly.'

So i did the first step.yep i can get to the avg website. second step, well that didnt work. and 3rd step, well i don't know how to change the connection parameters so i dont know how (or if) they have been change since the last update.

Anyone able to help me out on this? thanks

Also, just did a system scan using HijackThis, can anyone see any problems? Thanks

702548 2008-09-04 07:30:00 I had the same problem and same messages... dumped the friggin thing and loaded Avast (free version)

AVG version 7 worked well, but Ver.8 has given me nothing but grief since it was released.

702549 2008-09-04 07:32:00 Yep get Avast but delete AVG first gary67 (56)
702550 2008-09-04 07:43:00 My AVG 8 did the same thing yesterday 'The connection with update server has failed.
(Please follow these steps Make sure your Internet connection is active, please try to open the www.avg.com website)

So I presume they will sort it out.
I tried Avast it was a disaster install, led to a chain of events where I had to change hard drive to fix computer. Googled up about Avast and there are a lot of people having problems. Although some people here love the program.
My advice stay with AVG8 they will sort the bugs out just got to be patient.

Tick these then tick fix checked

702553 2008-09-04 09:32:00 Avast not installing was the cause of my problem. Someone suggested I change from AVG to Avast which turned out bad and un recoverable.
I have heard of horror installs before but never thought it would happen to me.
A bit of research shows Avast can be troublesome for some people.

702554 2008-09-04 22:03:00 I also changed Avg to Avast, and the false positives with Big Fish Games is annoying. It gets to the stage it won't even let a new game finish installing or intialising. It isn't just Big Fish either, I have heard it is quite common on a lot of games. supergran (108)
702555 2008-09-04 22:48:00 Supergran, I have Avast and haven't noticed any problems with that and Big Fish Games.
I don't use a lot of game sites, so couldn't comment about the other game sites.

Super Gran just googled big fish games what a cool site never going to get any work done now.
Thanks for your support of AVG, seems most people here rubbish it.
