467091 2006-06-28 23:46:00 Take 2 identical cars for example

One is a 2 litre 6 cyl and one is a 4 litre V8

Given everything being the same, maybe the 4 litre car weights just a tad more.

Both travelling on a steep up hill senario, the 4 litre car happliy maintain speed at 100km/h without dropping down a gear, low rev.

While the 2 litre car needs to drop to 3rd, throttle opens more, higher revs in order to maintain the same 100km/h speed.

Actualy I want to know whether an underpowered car would actually uses more fuel ?

The commodore is a V8 ?

467094 2006-06-29 03:51:00 ah no, its a v6..... but a v8 would be more econmical over a long distance compared to the v6. The V8 is more expensive when you drive around town, ie accelerating, then stopping continuesly (sp) Prescott (11)

Obviously the 6 cyl, 2 litre is more economical. Assuming you drive them the same places and the same way.
Just monitor it on both and then you'll know for sure.

467098 2006-06-29 06:52:00 depends a lot on how you drive and how the motors/gear box etc are setup.

the v8 would have to be doing 1/2 the revs to be as econmical assuming everything else is the same. in practice it never works like that. the more power you have the more you tend to use it which means more fuel used.

if the 2 litre is set up to be a screaming 6 then it could well be more exspencive to run than the v8. i know plenty of 2.4 litre motors 4 cyls that use more fuel than a 350 chev provided you don't do full throttle in the chev.

467099 2006-06-29 07:14:00 It depends. Can't say it. i.e. Lamborghini Murchielago vs. Porsche Carrera GT. Which one uses more fuel? Murchielago. Although the Carrera GT have V10 engine with 600bhp+ and Murchielago have V12 580bhp. The Carrera GT can save more fuel than Murchielago. Maybe it's weight is affecting.
Super charged engine like Ford GT same performance with Murchielago using V8 Supercharged the GT can saves a lot more fuel.

The question is about ordinary cars - not rich boy's toys.
