466985 2006-06-28 12:36:00 I'm looking at upgrading my laptop and would like to know others experiences with some of the brands, service wish or for technical support.

I'm looking at a duo core with either a 60 or 80 GB harddrive, 512 Min RAM and a Multi DVD writer +-/RW and RAM if it's on it.

I've had a look at the Toshibas, Compacs, Lenovas, Acers, ASUS's etc in the shops over the weekend and even the Dell website tonight.

The cheapest deal I've seen would have to be the Dell 6400 at about $1600 everything else for similar specs is around $1900-2300

Even Harvey Normans and Dick Smiths Laptop "sales" on the weekend were full of crap as some of the retailers on Pricespy still beat them by $200-300 in most cases for the same model.

Tell why why you think a particular model would be better and whose gonna give me the best deal...

466986 2006-06-28 12:52:00 depends what you are using it for, budget?
Me personally would look at the macbooks, but the price's are a bit high for my liking, but similar to the equivilant notebooks from the other manufactors for same specs.
Also with the ability to dual boot windows or run parallels and have the best of both worlds

466988 2006-06-28 13:15:00 Choose a quality one. Mine is crap. And the laptop is borken. It is made in Taiwan with no brand.
Here's Levono www.newsgd.com
And here's more detials on IBM I mean Levono laptops www.lenovo.com
I mean Levono is Chinese PC maker but more expensive than no brand, the quality wise is a lot better.
I'll get a Levono once another Intel Chips have released and built in Levono notebooks. :) Just waiting for Intel.

466989 2006-06-28 13:51:00 512 Min RAMDon't be strung up about the RAM that comes with it - it's the least expensive and easiest upgrade you can make after purchase. Greg (193)
466990 2006-06-28 20:57:00 OK, I wouldn't look at Dell as you don't know whats inside em (usually cheap for a reason)
I did a bit of reserch recently (for a client) and was quite impressed with the Asus and its line of product. Unsure how they are in usage (as my lappie is a Compaq) but their other products are quite good and reliable (so I am guessing the laptops are too).

Compaqs, yeah, mine is over 2 years old now and still chugging along.

IN the end, it depends what your require from the laptop, what your budget is, and what extra things you might want to do with it (like lower end/mid range gaming - which would require a better grafix card and more memory)

I'm using a 14" iBook, love it

466992 2006-06-28 21:48:00 ASUS.

Another reason for them - you can get it serviced if theres a problem here in NZ. No ringing India (Dell) for support.

466994 2006-06-29 07:34:00 I've heard that ASUS make their own gear whereas most of the others include whatever they can get their hands on at the time for the best price.

All the Acers I looked at on the weekend only had +/RW DVD drives in them yet the brochures said Multi/Multilayer, that to me means dual layer and both formats, so more research required on that front.
